Comments (12)There is no shooting involved. The hounds search for and follow the scent of a fox that may have been there even a few hours earlier. The huntsman and the "first flight" of riders try to stay right with the hounds as they follow the scent. Other groups of riders proceed at a slower pace often riding to a hilltop where they can see the action. Occasionally this hilltop group will see a fox come bounding out of the woods, and crossing a field, and then ten or fifteen minutes later see the hounds come out following the scent. Inevitably the fox will cross a stream and cause the hounds to lose the scent or it will "go to ground" and hide in a hole or a wood pile. At which point the huntsman will call them off, and cast them out to find another scent. My wife has been riding with this group for four years, and in all that time she has never seen a fox killed and only once saw the hounds running close enough to a fox that the hounds could see it, and even that time the fox managed to make it to cover and escape. Since I don't ride, I've only followed a couple of the hunts in a vehicle or on foot, and the only fox I've even seen on them was the one pictured below, which one of the members brings to the tailgate brunches after some of the hunts. 8 years agoA morning visit a few days ago. Only the second time in 25 years that we've seen a bobcat. They don't show themselves very often. Knowing I wouldn't have long to get a shot, I had to take this picture from a living room window and aim between two deck railings. Sure enough, no sooner had I snapped the photo than he/she disappeared in to the brush.
8 years agoHad our pond cleaned out and serviced yesterday. They did a really good job clearing all the algae and debris. You can even catch a glimpse of a goldfish or two under the lily pads.

This is the menace of the neighborhood. They chew through Christmas lights. They dig holes and, apparently they have also been chewing on my wooden fence.

Back in February I went to a conference in DC rather than going to one of the afternoon pre-conference sessions I went to the National Zoo.
8 years agoTried out my new vase yesterday. Practicing for an upcoming get together.
I just realized you can't see the vase!
OK - I give up . It's a fake tortiseshell glass vase and this is the first time I was brave enough to cut the stems off my roses and only leave 4 to 6 inches.

8 years agoRaven, did you take that pic at Nelson's? The lily looks like Evelyn Randig. This is a seedling I grew from Evelyn Randig. The lily tank it was in, hadn't been used in 15 years. It was overgrown with water weeds. The flood last year washed them out, and I was surprised to see several lilies come up. This is the first one that bloomed. I had named this one Erin, after my daughter.

8 years agoI am so thrilled! For some reason, my supposed to be 16 inch max coreopsis are monsters at, at least, three feet tall. Covered in three or four variations (wild flower seeds) of blooms. The last picture is the reverse which tickles me, like a secret... they're always solid gold.
