Because the shinier the paint, the easier to scrub with no damage. And people with bad ventilation have aerosolized grease particals floating in the air clinging to everything, necessitating scrubbing walls and ceilings and laundering drapes, and just staying stuck in the couch.

I use flat paint on walls in living areas and on ceilings, and semi gloss on trim. In bathroom and kitchen I usually use eggshell as I don’t care for glossier paint either, but many paint manufacturers now make scrubbable flat or matte paints. I haven’t used them myself, so can’t help you there. Ask at your paint store.

I use eggshell on the walls, flat on the ceiling & semi gloss on the trim. Unless you use really dark colors on the walls, then use flat so all the imperfections don't show up.

Also, things like doors, and trim around windows and door tend to get a lot of wear (read: grubby hands) so you want a paint that can be more easily washed clean.

I am the world's messiest cook. I do not understand how those TV cooks, (and I love to watch Lidia Bastianich) cook red sauces without aprons (!) and don't get anything on themselves!

With me, not only do I need aprons, I need to scrub down the stove and the wall when I am done cooking.

Oh yeah, the oven and the floor too.

Paints that have a bit more of a shine in their finish are good for rooms with less light.

Matte is rather dull. But you could use it in a room with low traffic, or walsl that are not in such great shape.

Most people like eggshell or satin for rooms with high traffic and semi-gloss for trim.

For kitchen you might want to increase the gloss level for the walls and the trim. Same for the bathrooms. Ditto for doors and cabinet doors and shelves that are in common spaces.

You can buy a small quantity and put it on your wall and see how it looks at different times of the day.

Bear in mind that the higher the gloss of the paint, the more it shows the imperfections of the wall beneath it.

IF the flat is really scrubbable you can put it on the ceiling. If you do, and it is not, be prepared to deal with kitchen grease on the ceiling..it always goes airborne no matter what vent you have. ... Satin on the wood trim if it is not stained...and eggshell on the walls...if you must. But semi gloss on the trim and satin on the sheetrock walls is nicer. The colors will look different if you go matte, flat or eggshell, so do your paint samples on the surface before you do the entire ceiling or room to make sure you are seeing what you picked out. So many decisions, right? It's only paint, and thank heavens it is not the odor issues there were years ago to deal with! Enjoy the journey.
