Best place to buy inexpensive, but durable mums

Hi all, so I had a beautiful mum that my mom had given me (laughing at “my mom gave me a mum” because with my accent they sound the same), it survived over winter in my garage since I wasn’t able to get it in the ground. But once spring rolled around and i planted it, it died. Sad but not a huge deal.

but I need to buy about 12-20 mums. Let’s just say 12 for cost savings, I saw online Lowe’s has various sizes, all the way down to 1 pint. I’m fine with waiting for them to grow, but has anyone ever had success planting these in spring and having them live over winter?

I don’t need anything fancy, my requirements are only this

-looks decent

- survives winter

-cost effective

Two years ago I bought some tiny, $1 mums at Walmart for some quick color. They are currently coming back for the third time, and seem happy as anything. Can’t get cheaper than a dollar! It was a totally unexpected treat. They have yellow blooms and grow about 2 feet tall and wide.

Wow! That’s great! Did you over winter them indoors or just out them straight in the ground? Since I notice you and I are in similar zones even though we have different climates

My beds are 20 ft long, too, but I only keep one or two pieces of row cover long enough to cover a whole row. Most of the time I need to cover smaller plantings, so the covers tend to get cut up a bit. In years when I'm organized, I tag them by size when I put them away for winter storage. We have many many many beautiful ones here in arkansas." The one in the picture looks like it might have been planted from a root bound container grown plant. Driving down the entire Eastern shore as I have several times, one is struck by the "Lagerstroemia gradient" haha. The fact huge tree-like ones are rare up around the canal (though not non-existant) but by the time you're in Cape Charles, very common. Well on the Cape and around the Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach, there are so many old crape myrtles it's obvious they are pretty impervious to all of the hurricanes and major thunderstorms that pass through the area. (BTW this is with the old standard pink clone. The new National Arboretum clones really are zn 6 hardy and will eventually mean this gradient is no longer as noticeable. I've seen when I was driving around Lancaster County that I saw a few old standard ones that were killed back by -5-0F temps this winter, but the new cultivars remained arborescent even up there. As to be expected though, they are more commonly seen in newer suburban tract housing landscapes and not in the older sections of towns like Gap, Parkesburg, etc.)

A really neat garden center in western WI that has a lot of hostas is Funkie Gardens in Prescot, WI. The place is worth stopping even if you are not going to buy anything. The garden center is set up around several very old (pre Civil War ?)houses in an old part of Prescot, about 3-4 blocks off of Hwy. 10. They are in large built-in planters, in potting soil. I didn’t take them out at all—I fully expected them to die, but the next year they popped back up after the bulbs were done. The flowers seemed smaller the second year, but I think it’s just that the plant itself was so much bigger.

in z5 ... its about 50/50 that they will winter over ... and that was why.. back in the day.. i traded or begged plants from local peeps... whose Ms had grown locally.. for years.. if not decades ...

the problem with bigbox... is that you have no real control over what was sent to the local store.. and whether ti will reliably return ...

these things root in days ... properly done ... and its not hard ... if you could get more from mom ... and divide them down to small plants .. and actually get them in the ground.. you might be surprised how large they could get.. by fall flowering time ...

I have mums that overwinter as true perennials, and that type is typically for sale now as small plants at nurseries that carry a range of perennials, either locally or mail order. For instance, I know Bluestone Perennials has quite a number of types of them and they had things on sale a couple of. weeks ago. I have seen them at regular local nurseries as well. Be aware that they spread relentlessly and need dividing every year or two. So if you don’t need 20 different types and you don’t need them all this fall, a little patience will save some $.

The fall sold ones aren’t hardy enough to winter over here in my garden. They are purely seasonal annual decor.

Thanks Babs! I’ll be sure to check out my local nurseries. Also I had no idea they spread so much! I knew about dividing but not the spreading, is this from seeds?

I noticed Walmart sells chrysanthemum seeds, has anyone had luck with those?

They spread via root spread. I have one plant I have moved several times, composting several chunks each time since it keeps overrunning its neighbors.
