Building a carport for our Victorian home - a little help?
Comments (7)That's pretty much what they are. A covering with pillars. You can dress it up or down depending on the type of pillars you use and the amount of gingerbread you use. My only advice would be not to make it flat. Make sure it has a decent pitch to it especially if you are in snow country. I'd also make sure it was tall enough for a van to park under with some ease The easiest way to make it blend is to repeat some of the elements of the gingerbread on your house and add it to the carport. The one probably most likely to have been used is what is on the porch area of the house tho I wouldn't limit myself to that if I had something else in mind that was really Victorian....See MoreNeed help with interior color selection for a victorian
Comments (8)The homes in our area that are from the end of the Victorian age are usually done in dark green, gold, rose, deep red and maybe some dark blue. Eastern Washington didn't see any big money until the late 1800's. Many have early Craftsman elements, too, with a return of the dark timbers and earth tones. If you like earth tones, what about dark green in the library? It's a beautiful color with most woodwork (think english pub green) and would look nice with the tiles around the fireplace. The music room would be beautiful in gold/mustard, very much like the tiles around the library fireplace. In both rooms, neutral or tan/brown furnishings (maybe some leather in the library) would look great. Do you have much furniture in the music room? Something soft (like a velvet type fabric) for a comfy side chair would look beautiful in the rust/terra cotta, or maybe use the color on pillows for accents? What color is your dining room/other rooms on the first floor? Would the terra cotta/rust tone work in your dining room? Warm orange tones are always nice in a dining room and stimulate appetite/conversation. Some green and gold accents would really tie the spaces together. The entry way might be a nice place to try a little wallpaper, or maybe some stenciling. Perhaps you could find something in a natural motif that would tie in the golds, rust and dark green. It sounds like a great project and a lot of fun. Remember, paint is one of the easiest things to change if you don't like it...but I would still try some test areas and see what it looks like under different lighting/times of day, before I painted the whole room :)...See MoreJust for fun...want to help furnish this room?
Comments (37)LOL At bodica :) and gad those sofa's are all fabulous. Maybe I have to shop craigs list more often LOL (I don't even bother here because it's normally junk). Oceanna we'll have to do a Seattle lunch group...held at an antique store LOL to make it worth the trip. I love your description of the light fixture. It really was art glass in it's time :) A small part of me wants to move it to the dining room (where they have a very cheap victorian copy) and then put something else in the parlor. We'll see how that goes. I'm definately into the real thing when it comes to antiques. I grew up in Port Townsend where you're surrounded by the things and have always loved them. One reason we're thinking about refurnishing the house is because they have a lot of fakes and it's very obvious. I'm sure I will do some shopping locally and in Seattle, but the idea of the trip abroad also appeals because the selection is so good. Our antiques here are their garbage sale items in the UK LOL But we'll see. I know my mother is going to get tired of me dragging her through antique stores pretty quick heh heh...See MoreHelp identifying a style for our exterior!
Comments (9)Everyone has an opinion and they are all valid. Personally, I think the one that is the perfect inspiration is the gray and white house in your first example. Copy the Gray and white house: gray garage door, gray front walk/driveway with white rock, gray steps, charcoal gray front door and its trim, charcoal gray light fixtures and downspouts. Everything else white. The eye is drawn to the gray accents and the white blends in the different angles. It's amazing what you can do with just paint and stain. You may not need to replace anything after that. Remove the bushes, too, as in the inspiration. DIY tips: I know you can stain concrete drive and walk, we did ours in a rust color. If the front steps are brick or unglazed tile, paint them with porch paint. If the tile is glazed, reface with slate cut to size and use construction adhesive to apply. Do the risers first and then the treads. If you need to grout match the slate....See MoreBen
