New laundry room - is stacked w/d so bad?

I’m converting a bedroom room into a laundry room (and adding a garage with attached separate room). How bad is it to stack them? I would like more counter space. There will also be a stacked w/d in the master closet.

I've had stacked front loading washer/dryers for the past 16 years and much prefer the set up. Got our first set while I was recovering from a c-section with my twins (who are my 4th and 5th children and our oldest was only 4.5 years old at the time) and my hubby was doing the laundry for me and he realized I was right, and we did need a larger capacity washer/dryer. LOL! We didn't initially stack them, but then hubby wanted to fit a utility sink in there and that was the only way. We didn't look back, we've had a stacked configuration ever since and I don't plan on going back the other way even though we have the space now to not have them stacked.

A stacked washer/dryer can be great. An idea for you - enclose the washer/dryer with cabinetry panels (similar to a full 24" deep side gable next to a fridge). This gives a nice built-in look, and allows you to secure a clothing rod to the side so you can have a nice hanging section next to your machines.

my thought is the laminate is a little too slick to hold the machine in place. Could you try putting some non slip type cushion under? Even the thicker rubber pad used as laminate pad may work, or the non slip padding used under area rugs. It would be a simple fix if it works.

I like the clear glass better. Why? those are some expensive machines you got, so show them off! You would beleive the attention I got with my Kenmore HE3T set! When I replaced them, I wanted the Electrolux models, but my partner wanted a HE TL more than I did, so I found one. I too like the fact that the machines doors on the washer and dyer can be reversed...too bad Meile doesnt offer this for the price they charge for their stuff, no pun meant my that Miele lovers (Larsi) but a spade is a spade..LOL

Where is the washer located? What is below it? I mean.... is there a basement or crawl space below? If so, try putting a pole from the basement (or crawlspace) floor to the floor joists under the washer. What your washer is sitting on must be very solid. Floor joists that span 12 to 14 feet can have a lot of bounce in them. Once the floor joists are moving it exaggerates the vibration of the washer. It's not your flooring material choice in any way shape or form. Don't cut your flooring. Whoever told you that is an idiot. This is a STRUCTURAL issue. I don't mean structural FAULT... there's nothing wrong with your house except some architect that doesn't have a laundry area on regular flooring and didn't design the proper support into it. This is normal. You need to take the bounce out of the floor STRUCTURE, not the floor covering.

When we moved into this house, the laundry area was a "closet" off the kitchen with the washer and dryer next to each other. We stacked our units, put in a slop sink and a small kitchen cabinet with small countertop from Ikea. That may be an option as well. Stacking has worked out really well for us and we got the needed slop sink (the house had none), extra storage and it looks good.

Thank you Skmom and Krystal. This is really helpful! :) I want stacked w/d and I was fearful it was frowned on. I’m 5’6” without shoes, so I think reaching wont be a problem.

Krystal - I thought about the panels, and I think it’s a good idea, especially since the w/d will be visible from the doorway. A more built in look will appear may be less utility roomish.

I am 5'6" and I can reach everything. I love stacked. Reach down pull out wet clothes and straight into the dryer. No door to work around, no dropped clothes and a small foot print. Here are some safety hints, if it is in earth quack country have the dryer secured to the wall. You need to be able to easily reach the water cut offs. Mine is electric and high up on the wall close to the front. I turn off the water after I finish the laundry as flood proofing. Machines need to be serviced and vents need to be cleaned so rethink those panels. If you really want/need them look for Endurings postings and see her beautiful set up. She designed cabinets that allow for access to everything. My laundry is in a very tight closet and I have to remove my dryer every time I need to clean out or service anything. I don't mind since I live in a 4th floor condo and anything is better than the laundromat.

Stacking is nice for usage ... not so much for servicing.

I love the idea of stacking machines ... but I'm only 4'11", so I went to Lowes and pretended I was using the machines. Nope, not for me. Got over that idea in a hurry.

Also, I have sort of decided I'm not going to get front loader machines again. They're so big, and given that we're approaching our empty nester years, we don't need large size any more.

I'm also 5'6"... and the shortest person in my family as my kids are all taller than me and have done their own laundry for years now. We decided to never house the machines in panels. We are a larger family, so our appliances get about double the amount of use per week of an "average family" so we have to consider them a little more disposable than most. Hubby is also very handy, so when repairs need to happen, he's the one who does the vast majority of them. We didn't want to have to work around panels.

This is really helpful. I can forgo the panels. That will save money :)

Where would you put the stacked w/d in the image below - the red or blue dot? I also included a pic showing how it fits into the house flow.
