OBF February Swap: A Blast from the Past # 2
Comments (166)Yea, Erica! You got it right with Johnny Weissmuller. You probably knew that already because all the clues fit together when you get it right. Some information/explanations: He won a total of 5 Olympic gold medals, 3 in the Paris 1924 and 2 in the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games (clues included collected gold, two very successful gold finding trips, played games in Paris, famous for something before he was a famous actor, part of the golden age of sports (1920's) before he was part of the golden age of Hollywood). I really didn't think about one's golden years until I saw how that clue was interpreted yesterday. I thought someone would have googled golden age and found out about the golden age of sports. The US Olympic committee calls him swimming'a first superstar. I really thought someone would have gotten it with clue 5. He was a legendary swimmer, and he starred as Tarzan, the legendary lord of the jungle. Further I used the word guerilla soldiers on purpose since it sounded like gorilla, and he managed to avoid capture by doing his Tarzan yell and then the soldiers recognized him, were big fans, and escorted him safely back to the hotel. Great job, Erica! This concludes the Blast from the Past Password game. Thank you for playing, everyone! Erica, I will get your prize out to you. I will post my package from Amy when I get back on Wednesday....See MoreA Blast From the Past
Comments (0)I was telliing you all that I had begun in 2012 to re-read many of the posts from then and am working my way forward. Okay, although much of it was fascinating, including seeing those of you there then who are still here now, and seeing other eager learners there who aren't here now and copying much of that enlightening information to my OneNote journal. . . I lost it just now. I'm not sure what the protocol is for re-posting a member's post. . . .I'm not sure whether this is appropriate or not. But this was my laugh of the week--especially given the timing, this evening, when it is supposed to reach a low of 5. From Luvabasil: WELCOME! You are going to get some awesome advice on this site. I was a fairly experienced garder when I moved to Oklahoma (I was a former horticulture major for goodness sake) But here, I couldn't grow anything! Not even rosemary. These guys brought me out of the depths of depression and self doubt and now I am up to basil, garlic and yes, rosemary. That isn't everything I planted, that is only what was harvestable. There are, however, several things, of which you should be forwarned: 1. There is a site virus called "I wanna grow everything". There is no cure. It is similar to the manic phase of a manic depressive episode. It may lay dormant for a small period of time in July and Aug, or anytime the temperature hits 103 degrees. I have found December to be the absolute worst phase of this virus. 2. I posed a question one morning on gophers and raccoons. The guns, the shovels and the screaming was not working. And I was really tired of my husband looking like Chevy Chase. So I asked what I should do. Slowpoke suggested alcohol. The gophers loved it and invited their friends. So I tried self medication. During the self medication, I ordered 2500 daffodil bulbs many of which I am still planting. I should of asked for specific directions on the advice. 3. Finally, do not read this blog late in the evning. Seriously, you will be up all night wondering how large you can expand the garden without angering your spouse, or wondering if it is too late to plant a particular something, or you will just giggle so loudly it wakes up the house. Just wanted you to be prepared. And welcome to the absolute best discussion site ever! Luvabasil Thank YOU Luvabasil, wherever you are, 5 years later. . . . yep, giggling loudly, but husband has earphones on. And slowpoke, if you're reading, here's to you!...See MoreFunny blast from the past. So you want to grow a gardenia.
Comments (18)bossyvossy: I still do (hand-pick lawn weeds) -- it's something we kids all did as part of our chores AKA family contribution ADA do as your told. After 26 years at our current house, I really don't care (much) if the neighbors laugh. If the weather's nice, to me pulling weeds can actually be quite therapeutic -- don't ask my back, though, after a day of pulling! :) I started to read the old gardenia thread, and had to close it, lest I jinx myself. For whatever reason, I planted a gardenia in our yard ~ 20 years ago. I pretty much do nothing to it, and it has somehow thrived despite my neglect. The flush of blooms doesn't last long, between the thrips and the immediate heatwave that comes through right about bloom time. (It's ~ 3' x 4' and flocked with about 100 blooms -- with 20-30 buds waiting in the wings.) It's one of those bushes that I do contemplate pulling: blooms only once a year, then just sits there. :) Perhaps my butterfly garden expansion will push me to remove the gardenia (or at least move it somewhere else)....See MoreA blast from the past -- was this yours?
Comments (16)I don't remember this before, but glad you got one! : ) Here's an old thread with interior pics from My3dogs. I was thinking she had some brown transferware plates with a dog face, but I don't see them in these pics. Sure do miss her!!! my3dogs...See Morealabamaav
