First Flower Ever on Sunday

Gothic Finery has its first flower ever open today. Actually, it had two. This just came from Florida. We potted it and it put up not one but three scapes. I am impressed with the flower. It has some teeth (with an eye and edge--good for the hybridizing). It even has some edge and teeth on the sepals. It would be neat if we could get a colored edge as well as teeth on the sepals.

We are so far behind this year since the spring was so cold. Last year at this time we had all our seedlings planted. We haven't even started this year.

I thought I was far behind. Will you still plant all those seedlings now or wait until fall?....Great form on Gothic Finery. I hope that is passed along with the edges.....Maryl

njmomma, Choral Majority is a good late bloomer to have. Linda, I am not sure why two you picked for favorites, Her Royal Highness and Westbourne Peaches Pickled are starting blooming so late. I will have to look them up to check but didn't think they are registered as late blomers. Nancy, I remember UP AGAINST THE SUN did not bloom for me the first year I had it. Then I moved it and thought I killed it and bought another one. But the first one came up in the spring much to my surprise. So I just added extra fans to it with the new one I had bought. Chris, I have daylilies that have yet to open their first blooms of the year. Of course, I also have some that just finished for the year. But as long as I have ones still to bloom then I am very happy. Mantis, that is a shame that you forgot your camera. I just know there was lots to see at Ashwood.

n.f.p.- good question. If I had to pick a size and age I'd say 2.5 to 3 feet tall and 4 years old as a median/average...and that's probably still a tad on the optimistic side. Of course, you have to factor in whether you're growing in a colder shorter season place or a hotter, more tropical longer season place. If I were to start over I'd grow them fast with something nitrogen heavy, progressively upotting, lots of sun and heat, pots on concrete. Then at 2.5- 3 years of age, put the seedlings on Excalibur from Florida Colors, a time release commercial grade plumeria specific fertilizer. Putting my seedlings on Excalibur last year got me ridiculous bloom rates this year...that seems to be how it works. I used to swear by organic growing for plumeria, but all it got me were bushy green plants and alot of bugs...I'm not growing a salad. Pictured is a (first year blooming) Rising Sun seedling. I've got three Rising Sun Seedlings blooming... and so it appears, a total of 9 first time bloomers this season! For what it's worth: I had one bloom at two years, three bloom at 3 years, and now nine bloom at four years.

Maryl, our goal is to have them all in the ground by the end of July. We have planted in September before, but they don't have enough time to make enough root growth to keep them from frost heaving.

Gothic Finery is great, I know I’ve not seen it before. I’m guessing you have some crossing in mind for it. OMG, all,of those seedlings, the weather is nice this week, hope you get them all in the ground.

Now that's a lot of seedlings! I don't have one tenth of that, but I know I don't have enough room to plant what I've started this year.

Those seedlings look healthy! And just the sight of them makes my back hurt!!! Impressive number. I can see you have great plans for Gothic Finery. Yea for more seedlings!

Beautiful blooms! Gorgeous edges! It's nice to have blooms that show that it is the correct plant at the start, isn't it? And it is such a nice one.
