4 out of 15 spring planted day lilies actually bloomed
Comments (4)Daylilies will bloom when they are mature. If conditions are good, they will continue to bloom (rebloom) until conditions trigger their dormancy period. So, by providing regular moisture and feeding, you should get excellent bloom that will increase each year. Daylilies are heavy feeders and giving them any organic fertilizer on a regular basis is good. To get maximum bloom, eliminate any seed pods that form and after the scape finishes, cut it off below the foliage for appearance sake. They make good compost, btw. I do recommend a heavy feeding in spring when growth first starts, with a fertilizer selected for your soil, but in general a ratio of 4-1-2. Sounds like you're doing great. Comments (20)many plants are triggered to bloom by the length of the day, But I don't think hostas are some of them. Mums bloom based on length of day as do poinsettia. If the length of the day were a factor in hosta blooming, they would always set bloom at the same time every year....and that's not so. My whole garden was out of whack this year because of the very very late spring. Nothing bloomed early and then when it did get warm enough, we had roses, tulips and peonys all blooming at once. I remember one year when we missed February...went from January to Spring! For 20 years I ran the Arboretum's plant sale always the first Saturday in May. That year we were way too late, everyone had their gardens planted. I had dug a bunch of hosta and just sat them on the ground next to the garage where I couldwater them as needed and theywere out of the sun. They completely leafed out and grew into nice plants, just sitting on the ground, not in a pot or anything. Then this year, people didn't want to buy plants because it was way too cool and it snowed the day before! And the forsythia was prettire that I have ever seen it. usually there is a lot of frosted buds, an early warm spell coaxes it into beginning to bud and then the temp drops and the buds never make it,. But we didn't have any early warm spell this year!! In fact it's just now warming up for real! Linda C...See MoreOne flower at a time
Comments (20)LOL! You guys are cracking me up. I was thinking of posting some non-PETA friendly suggestions but you guys beat me to it! Haha. Laurie, you put a mixture of eggs, oil and garlic on your plants? Sounds to me like you made them MORE appetizing! Actually my blooms smell good enough to me to eat, so I guess I can't blame the deer. Though if deer were eating my blooms I'd be after them as well. As it is, mine are falling off the plant before they even open fully because of the 100+ temps. here. Hazel's solution sounds promising if you don't have other pets. Or maybe get creative and find something with a motion sensor that would activate and move or make noise when the deer approach, like some of those Halloween door decorations! We do feel for you. Hope you find something that works. Kevin...See MoreBlooms the last couple of days...
