We need addition ideas and overall remodel ideas

We want to:

Add a Master Bedroom with a Master Bath

Two car carport

Do something else with the Laundry (it is currently in the carport with no AC)

We rather extend towards the front yard so we can eventually add a pool in the back. I do not know how doable this is...

All ideas are helpful.

Without a site plan, and setback requirements? No one can give you any informed suggestions, other than do not ruin that great MCM house with a remuddle. Hire a good local architect who is appreciated the style. And have a realistic budget for your wants. This is not a “just” project. What you want starts at 150K and only goes up, to way up.

Our biggest issues are with the sunroom, really. We have a nice, light room that is long and narrow with low windows and somewhat awkwardly-placed French doors. Right now, there is a desk installed in the "alcove" area at the top of the plan, and there is basically just a big empty space from the desk to the back of the sofa near the TV. It feels awkward. We also really need a table that isn't the dining table, because we need a work/project space that is not our beautiful table. Ideas: 1. Put TV on alcove wall (top right of plan), near French doors, with built-in media cabinets. Then put main dining table in area near washer/dryer closet. Put small 4-person table in current dining room, with possibly a small seating/reading area near the hall doorway (i.e., 2 chairs). The concern with this plan is fitting in the sofa, chair and ottoman without blocking the French doors or feeling crowded. 2. Keep everything as-is, but add a small dining table between TV area and alcove at top right of plan. In alcove, put in built-in style storage and a reading nook. Put the small dining/work table in the old "formal" dining room and move the spinning wheels to the alcove area and install a storage wardrobe in alcove. But that leaves the problem of the sort of vast open space between the back of the fireplace and the French doors.

It seems to me there is a much more efficient way of expanding your house than the above proposal. Can you draw in where the stairs are right now? Moving stairs seems like a huge avoidable expense. What is the basement like? My cousin had a fairly creepy basement under his little 900 sf house, but he finished it, adding egress Windows so he could double his square footage; he put a bedroom, full bath, laundry room, family room and wet bar down there. Here's a suggestion. It hinges on ditching the side porch. Right now your public rooms (kitchen, living) and your private rooms (bedrooms, bathrooms) are all jumbled up. It's better to have public all together on one side of a small home and private on the other. To achieve this, I drew your kiddo's room + the front bathroom as a master suite. I'm hopeful that closing up the existing doorway and opening a new one across from the vanity is an affordable project. Another bummer about your existing layout is the disconnect between your living spaces including your back yard. To remedy this, I put the kitchen where your master bedroom is. It would be so nice to have one larger, open living space that peeks to the backyard. It's hard to tell if it's feasible, but I thought that by closing off the master bedroom door you could create a closet for a stackable washer/dryer outside the bathroom. I'd enjoy working this out on graph paper if you have a chance to measure your rooms. Yours is one of my favorite kinds of . projects!

It sounds like those people may have two 36” over/under Sub Zero fridges. I had one in my former home...was still going strong at 25 years old, when we sold the house. In our new home, we put in a 42” French door SZ. Once again, terrific refrigeration. Not a lick of trouble after 4 years, unlike other brands complained about on this forum. I expect this fridge will be the long lasting workhorse our former fridge was. A big plus...Sub Zero has the best customer service in the industry. Since you stated that you and your husband are willing “to spend some money,” I urge you to find a store, where you can check them out.

I have the site plan and of course I will use an architect. I came to the forum to look for general ideas from creative people.

An architect IS a creative person. Also a skilled/educated person. What is doable is based on setbacks, lot lines sewer lines, septic, etc..................and budget. And then city/town approval , permits and more permits. Point is, get on- your- site help, and be armed with as many inspiration photos of mcm homes as you like. And a couple hundred grand. : )

Not everything can be answered in a forum.. This is one of those.

Love the look of this home!! Of course the architect will be able to guide you as to what can and can't be done, but I would bump the left side forward, use that for a carport (extending a little past the left end of the house if needed for length), convert the existing carport space into temp-controlled master, bath and laundry, using frosted glass behind the vertical green boards for privacy/weatherproofing. Have a hallway straight out from the existing front door to access laundry, master and carport. Use/add skylights along the hallway and in the front bedroom and bath for light. Can't wait to see the finished project!
