Any time the flow of air (or part of the air) has to change its velocity vector (direction and/or speed), even slightly, work is done on the air, and this requires either heating or force times distance. Pressure is force over area. Velocity change occurs not only when a duct bends, but when there is turbulence in the duct or at the duct walls, or when the air is forced through a filter, around baffles, etc. Thus, there are many ways that pressure drops occur along a flow path. If not, one could blow through a straw without having to build up pressure in one's mouth. I use a large (three-foot-square) vaned ceiling diffuser to introduce MUA into a hallway adjunct to the kitchen. The diffuser is about 18 feet from the edge of the hood. This configuration was the best option relative to where I could take the air from the roof area. It is my expectation that by the time the air gets to the vicinity of the hood it is flowing relatively smoothly and low in velocity due to the size and length of the hall. Certainly other approaches would work for other kitchens depending on where the air is taken from and how a house is architected. Test kitchens use a porous diffuser panel in an adjacent wall to the hood under test. I am sure that from a functional point of view, MUA flowing out from enough toe-kick area would also work, so long as it wasn't somehow directed at the stove. For example, if a cooktop were on an island, and the entire toe-kick area were grilled using a set of registers, the MUA would flow out and then up in a way that did not disturb the rising effluent from the pans. Even down flow behind a refrigerator can work if the path behind and underneath the refrigerator is relatively open (several times the area of the supplying duct.) Never forget that perfect is the enemy of good enough, and what we are trying to accomplish is good enough capture of grease, moisture, and odor. Good enough is also user dependent, so not everyone needs to put up with the compromises that a nearly perfect MUA system would impose on a house. So, my best advice is to find a way to introduce the air that doesn't blow at the cooking zone and disturb the natural rise of the cooking effluent. kas

What a pretty room and home you have. I have to agree with everyone, the windows and view are fabulous. I don't agree, however, with a window bench. One thing I would do is pull the sectional back so that there is no rug coming out from underneath the sofas in the back. In other words, pull the sectional to the far corner of the rug (next to the glass top table). This will shift things over a bit and move the recliner out of the walking path. Visually, it will look better also. It's not that far in either direction, so it won't be too far from the television either. If you have radiant flooring, you probably won't be able to put in floor outlets. Moving the sectional to the rugs' edge will possible allow a table with lamp or floor lamp at the outlet on the large wall (closest outlet to your desk). I agree, a comfy chair and table with lamp in the far back corner would be perfect. Especially the lamp. Is there an outlet near the glass top table and chairs so that a floor lamp could be placed there? If you get three good lamps in the room, you'll be able to turn off the can lights for a relaxing evening. If you cannot do floor outlets, I might only do one sofa table (against sectional back facing kitchen). I can't tell how much space is actually there - would there be a decent walking path to the glass table? If so, something more hefty than the table you linked from CB2. Make sure it is not taller than the back of your sofa (minus the cushions that stick up). If open below, buy a couple of woven wicker baskets with lids to hide toys, games and/or colorful throws.

For organics, the optional ones are the difference between good, great, and fantastic (assuming the soil chemistry is reasonably balanced and tested). Which way (or a combination is also fine) to feed is up to you and I have no preference for others' lawns. Either organics or synthetics will produce a nice lawn, but I do think it's a good idea to feed organically at least once per year. thank you! suzyq53, to answer your question, we added a large closet in the corner on the wall with the bar so we could have storage to put away toys. We desperately needed that, though it does limit the option of having a TV on that wall as the wall space gets tighter on that side. I went through a bunch of media console options with my husband last night - from navy blue to asian-inspired to more traditional. What I'm realizing is that he has a stronger preference for more traditional looks for larger pieces and he is more comfortable with me adding pops of color and uniqueness in pillows, wall art, decor that can be more easily changed out. This is our first time decorating a space we designed for ourselves so I get it. Of all the pieces I showed him that I would like, he liked this one the best. It's 68" so it can accommodate a larger TV if we upgrade down the road. It has a little bit of uniqueness in that it brings in iron in the doors. And with the glass, I'm thinking that I can insert pops of color through decor. Do you think that will still look okay?
