Comments (9)Collecting seeds takes patience. Here in zone 7, they aren't ready until late October or early November. The pods will eventually turn brown and split. I cut off the flower pods and bring them into the basement if frost is in the forecast. I let them hang upside down to dry and collect the seed in a paper bag. I tested my germination before trading. My volunteer probably came from the purple plant. It's a totally different color with different foliage too. It's putting out new growth now and should start blooming in another month. The white one I have is "White Profusion". The purple is unnamed....See MoreFirst pair true leaves fell off and drying leaves on bush bean!
Comments (2)Hi, Thanks for replying to back to me. 3 out of 4 of the previously mentioned beans are now fine, they sprouted new growth. The 4th, I cannot say much about as it seems like it may have taken too much of a shock, the new leaves that were supposedly going to come out, have hardly opened up and I see hints of them already drying up. Oh wells, 3 out of 4 is still good enough. It's gotten a lot warmer lately now in the 70s than it was before where it fluctuated more between mid 50s to 70s. Thanks for the temperature info....See MoreWhat do you wish you knew when you first started gardening?
Comments (32)That drought-resistant shrubs and trees in SoCal need undisturbed native soil to establish symbiotic relationships with soil fungi to truly go unwatered for 6 months of the year. Xeric plants need to get established, then they seem to do best when largely left alone, with not much more than some mulch, compost teas in the rainy season and light pruning to thrive. Masanobu Fukuoka foresaw this in One Straw Revolution (a book as radical in some ways as anything else the 70s had to offer) when he advocated abandoning modern ag methodologies, especially tilling, focusing instead on preserving soil food web ecologies in the topsoil. I doubted it for years, but modern soil science and my experiences sure have made me a believer in it...See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
