Kiss Your Bananas Buh-Bye
Comments (3)The article implies that it is the Cavendish variety under attack. What I would like to know is whether other fresh-eating banana varieties have some resistance. If so, we will still be able to get bananas, they will just be a little different. If this fungus is wiping out other fresh-eating bananas, then we have a much bigger problem. But also, this sort of problem was almost inevitable. All Cavendish bananas are clones. That means there is no genetic variation in the population. Any disease or pest that can be fatal to one Cavendish plant can be fatal to them all. If the disease or pest can't be quarantined, the whole population is in danger. In retrospect, it seems kind of silly that we've been using such a vulnerable plant population for a major food crop, doesn't it? Of course, we do the same with al of the grafted fruit trees (citrus, apples, pears, peaches, plums, etc.) The biggest difference is that the other fruits in question still produce viable seeds, so we can do more (conventional) breeding work to try to breed in resistance to any emerging pest or pathogen....See MoreBuh-Bye...
Comments (15)I agree that Jordin has really come into her own. For her age, she is simply amazing. I think Melinda is a great talent, but I'm with Simon in that she needs to "drop the surprise". I think all three of the girls will have great careers no matter where they place. I really think that Blake is probably the most talented of what's left of the guys. Although, my underdog vote goes to Phil. So much of it is lack of experience and we've seen how far Jordin has come so maybe all Phil needs is a little more time???? LOL. Comments (28)Again, thank you for the compliments! The ceilings are 10' tall The island is 9'-2"l X 4'-8"w The granite is called delicatus juparana. We really love the granite. Originally we fell in love with something that was similar, but when the fabricator told us it was $60 more per square foot, we about died...it was 'exotic.' and priced accordingly. So after that let-down, we kept searching and happened across this granite at the same yard. We put it on hold and were nervous about the cost. When the fabricator called, we were relieved. Not 'in budget,' but worth the few extra dollars to get what we really wanted. If you Google 'delicatus juparana' you can see many slabs and the differences between them. It's neat stone!...See Morebuh bye old kitchen! Hello, new kitchen!
Comments (433)Hmm, I was just pondering today - how do you post a new build kitchen reveal after you have lived there for a year and a half. What might that subject title be??? I guess I should have just done it without the backsplash but now that I am so close to doing that I might as well wait....or that was my thought process. Things do take much longer than you hope/plan. I thought I'd have the splash done this spring. Ha! edit: now you are bringing back memories - when we moved in no glass in the cabs and half the crown was missing and that took way too long than I care to think about. So yes, waiting for the splash. I have to admit I got all excited again when I saw your thread pop on the first page. So you aren't saying we have to wait until Thanksgiving are you! Are you? :O...See MoreUser
