Bosch 36" Retractable Downdraft Motor Dead in 2 Yrs

Yes, I know "telescoping" downdrafts aren't the best, but with my cooktop placement and ceiling height it was a) the best aesthetic choice and b) what we could afford when we revamped our kitchen (see pix for the setup. Wolf cooktop). Two years later, appliance repairman says lowest of 3 speeds on the motor is burned out and advises replacing with something American-made. Cost to replace the motor, he says, likely to be half of what Bosch unit cost to begin with ($1600 for 600 CFM blower and 14" snorkel). Says American made is a) cheaper and b) replacement parts (like motors) easier to get. His experience is that retractable unit motors often burn out in about 2 years!

Bosch only offers a 1-yr warranty, but I'm going to try calling them anyway because this is ridiculous. So much for vaunted German engineering.

If I do replace with another brand, what are the recommendations? And please don't tell me to get a full hood, because I'm convinced it would be horrifically ugly.
