Snake found while mowing. What is it?

I live in kentucky and found this snake while mowing. Trying to figure out what it is and whether or not it is venomous.

Comments (8)I've avoided mowing the grass along this area for 2 weeks now, to avoid scaring off the robins. Also, not spraying neem on this rose(toxic or not) for the same reason, now that I know the nest is there. Comments (8)YOU are the one who can't say anything nice or educated, emmawilliams1, not to mention making all Texans look like ignorant and cowardly hicks who feel the need to hack everything to death because something that looked like it hurt/scared/whatever someone. NONE of the snakes that "look like worms" are venomous, so it is quite possible that the animal which "bit" your niece wasn't even a snake at all. Even if it WAS, what animal is not going to defend itself if stepped on? Almost every animal I can think of-which is a LOT of animals-will bite or scratch or do whatever it can to get a foot off of it, and I don't blame them. MOST people who get bitten by venomous snakes, though, are bitten while trying to do exactly what you like to do-killing the snake. By avoiding that behavior and leaving snakes alone, you pretty much negate that risk. I live in SC, by the way, on 56 acres of woods and fields, as rural as you can get and still have electricity, and I state that because I know a lot of the snake haters love to claim that us "city people" just don't understand what it's like to live where there are venomous snakes. I catch Canebrake Rattlers that are far from "worm-like" every year in my yard, and I haven 't been bitten, since I don't try to kill them....See MoreFound this while having coffee this morning...
Comments (9)Do you think it's lauterbachii? It certainly could be. I have a ciliata, lauterbachii and Monette all together in a large pot. They are all wound about each other, but I have tags on them to help me figure out who is who. When I traced back from the bloom (which is like trying to count a wad of snakes LOL) I came to the Monette tag. This is one of my most reliable bloomers. Comments (5)Thanks, y'all - I think it's impressive, too! Actually, I think the early instars are more impressive, because the scolia? (horns) are longer relative to the size of the body. Here's a picture I took of one I raised before - It was bluish on the top, KC, you just can't see it very well in that picture. I've got another picture I'll post and see if you can see the blue better - When I checked it this morning, it had purged on the paper towels (another sign it's done eating) and had gone underneath the foam rubber on the bottom of the terrarium. 8 years agoLook at the shape of the head and neck. USA venomous snakes (except for coral snakes) have a well-defined head on a comparatively slender neck.
The others - the majority non-venomous - have a smaller head or thicker neck (whichever way you want to think of it)
The pattern of scales on the underside of the tail are not usually useful to a non-biologist.
