Comments (4)The U shaped bamboo trellises are much more useful. When the plant gets too tall you just loop it down and then position the growing tip facing up and let it continue to grow. If you cut your plant back, soon you will have multiple growth reaching for the ceiling and it will be more difficult to deal with than it is now. This is one Hoya that needs a sturdy pot and trellis because it will become quite heavy as it grows larger. Mike...See MoreMary, Mary, quite contrary. How does your garden grow?
Comments (4)Hello desertsage, If it were me I would plant it in the full sun garden. I am growing both plants here in Las Vegas at about 2200 ft elevation - even hotter I suspect than where you are. They are in full sun positions but on the east side of the house so eventually late in the afternoon they get some relief from the sun but not much. It's funny what you said about the more dead look in the summer being normal. I so get that. Our clevlandii is spectacular every spring a six foot wide mass of purple and blue candelabras but by now the flowers are dried and the plant looks dormant. I used to dead head imediately but I've grown to love the look of the dried calxys(sp) The apiana I grew from seed and planted out just last spring right next to the clevlandii but it is fine although still small in its hot spot after a brutal summer that wiped out all the greggiis I had. I think I'm going to have to add apiana to the short list of salvias that seem to like it here in the furnace. Maria...See MoreHow does your garden grow?
Comments (33)30 something lbs of wild blueberries in the freezer. I picked in the overgrown field where I grew up. Had a big drama when my little dog wandered off while I was picking obsessively. 26 hours later after many hours of friends and neighbors searching he deigned to bark and I found him deep in the woods truly stuck. Relieved and mortified. Whew. Blueberry muffins for the neighborhood tomorrow. Tomatoes are coming in - Sungolds, Oregon Spring, Magic Mountain and Príncipe Borghese so far. Peppers too. Lots of broccoli - Piracaiba is a new favorite. Squash is going nuts - got through a cucumber beetle infestation - next infestation is holding off. I put up an small archway and the squash is going UP. Cucumber may be swamped by the squash vines - poor planning on my part. Haricot vert bush beans are about start producing. Napa and Toscani kale. Leeks, carrots and cabbage are coming along. Lots of herbs. My peas are looking miserable - I mean to pull them but they are still producing a bit. Lettuce needs to be pulled up. And I need to plant some fall crops. It is very dry in central Maine right now....See MoreAnglophilia
