Comments (5)I had my first good pomegranate harvest this year from three potted plants, and really dealt with the ripening question, since color and size are really not enough to go by. I had never heard of the metallic sound, lazygardens, but I just went and tried it on the last fruit still hanging on the plant, and I think it works! After some research, I found these other ways to tell ripeness: -- squarish shape of fruit -- calyx beginning to curve back in on itself -- very tough, hard skin not easily marked with fingernail -- splitting (this is the final sign of ripeness, and these fruits will not keep well) By the way, plant cultural differences must really impact pomegranate quality. For example, my 'wonderful' pomegranates came out vastly different from the commercial fruit I tried the other day. The latter were very juicy, very staining, the arils dark and almost stingingly acidic (with substantial sweetness too), and the seeds very hard. My own had pinkish arils with non-staining juice, softer seeds, and a milder sweeter taste. I probably could not use mine for juice, but for fresh eating, I am very happy with them. Good luck...See MoreRooting project' started in October, but cuttings still dormant
Comments (4)I was given cuttings from a Brunswick last summer, August I believe. After a month or so one of the cuttings rooted and developed top growth, and the other had no signs of developing anything. I potted the rooted cutting, and also buried the other cutting in the soil at the side of the pot to "give it a chance". I've kept the potted cutting on our glassed sunporch through the winter where the temps have been high enough that it didn't go dormant and it gets sun all morning. Watered sparingly. I noticed yesterday that there's a little green growth coming up from the second cutting, so there's probably hope for yours....See MoreWonderful vs Grenada pomegranate
Comments (12)Gro-power is the fertilizer, and I use a pretty light hand. I want flower production and fruit set as opposed to vegetative growth. All gardening is local, and Gro-power products work very well here in So Cal (recommended by Dave Wilson Nursery for backyard orchard culture). Too much nitrogen is the enemy when you're controlling vigor with pruning. My pom beds have redwood bark mulch out beyond the dripline and free municipal mulch within the dripline....See MoreApple tree is still dormant
Comments (1)If it doesn't leaf out at all this season, it is dead. However some bare root trees received while still dormant can take an extended time before they do leaf out. But no tree can survive long without foliage....See MoreDave in NoVA • N. Virginia • zone 7A
