Should I Open Up The Kitchen Pass Through or No? Advice Needed!!!
Comments (18)Whether to go down to counter height with the opening: Are you tidy? Do you leave things around the sink and will it bother you to see the backs of the things you leave around the sink from the other room? If you want to have a bit a screening around the sink I would leave it and you can create a countertop ledge/bar area at the higher level, the seating would have to be bar stools, not counter stools. If you don't want any screening of the sink from the other room, open it down to counter height....See MoreSuggestions, Advice, Details to add before we order our IKEA Kitchen?
Comments (24)Thanks Benjesbride! Well, as seems to be our fashion, we had an unexpectedly rushed last minute do-or-die IKEA kitchen buying experience when our contractor told us he'd start putting in the cabinets on Tuesday (we had been debating trying to reuse the old ones that came with the home vs buying anew). So we drove to IKEA the same afternoon I posted this question. After much consideration, we went with the Ringhult white fronts (the kitchen associates said those were the most popular/durable with strong reviews) and we took everyone's advice to get rid of the corner cabinet and move the dishwasher into that space! I was pretty nervous about making the call (husband was not a fan of losing the extra counter space since we have a number of appliances that we use regularly), but we both agreed that having the kitchen feel more open was with the trade-off, since everything else in the home is pretty closed off with narrow passageways. At this point, we just have to move forward and hope for the best (I second guess myself constantly) and hope we made the right choice for layout and aesthetically! Benjesbride, funny that you suggested that pantry where you did; one used to exist there but that's where the termites were found and after they opened the pantry up, the space felt a lot bigger. But, yeah, I'm counting on all those IKEA drawers to help sort out our kitchen storage system (along with donating things we don't use or need)!...See MoreSmall kitchen / need storage! Add more cabinets or leave it more open?
Comments (20)Update: it's done! I love how it turned out. Ikea didn't carry the same cabinets that we used on the other side of the kitchen so we went with plain white and matched the handles. The kitchen somehow feels bigger now! We get our new marble quartz counters next week. Exciting. The next project is -- should I put a chalkboard or whiteboard or something on the white fridge panel? It feels like it could use some of my kids' artwork or something homey and creative...See MoreKitchen design dilemma to add large island
Comments (13)I am sure you will have a nice new kitchen when you are done! I see you are moving major things like sink, stove, toilet. If you can move less and use current locations it can cut costs significantly. What it the advantage to rearranging the powder room so much? I think the big island is nice and will be used. The most used things in my kitchen are: fridge, sink (everyone seems to wash their hands at our second sink), microwave, cup cabinet. So the closer to the main living areas those areas are the better. I am not clear where the living area of your house is, but I would want the fridge closest to that so people do not cut all the way through the kitchen to grab something. Rather than moving the sink to the island, consider a smaller second sink in the island farther from the existing sink. Would you be willing to post the entire floor plan showing any other changes you are making and how the spaces relate to each other? It sounds like a big project. You will get some criticisms here. But you can sort out any helpful comments that work for the way you and your family live. lafdr...See Morermwilson2
