Big beautiful teas
Comments (7)I agree, Devoniensis has a reputation for staying small for what seems like forever. I have mine in a very modest space, and I'm hoping it can stay there. I believe that teas can be pruned to some degree without looking as though they'd had a butch haircut. Not every tea needs a 10 x 10 foot space, and Devoniensis may not need it for decades. It could stay in a large pot for the rest of its life if it had to. As Jeri mentioned, Lady Hillingdon is on the smaller side, although I've seen pictures of a large specimen here and there. Westside Road Cream Tea doesn't get especially huge. Duchesse de Brabant is not a giant either and is gorgeous. I say if you want a tea get a tea. Just stay away from the known giants like Le Vesuve and Mrs. B.R. Cant and you'll be fine. In my experience pruning makes them put out lots of new growth so I wouldn't worry about making them unsightly. Ingrid...See MoreDA Rose Bed Edging Question
Comments (6)Thanks for all your suggestions. I think I was confusing with my question. I am looking to not use a traditional edging plant, but rather use lower growing DA roses for the foreground and taller variety behind them. What I don't want are roses in the foreground that are growing like a vase shape, with lots of bare ankles showing. In the DA catalog (2012, I haven't gotten the 2013 one yet) they show pictures of some of their roses in garden settings that have leaves and some flowers all the way around. Not so much a vase shape, but more like meatballs, if that makes sense.. :-) I remember the Munstead Wood's rose as showing that "meatball" shape, nicely rounded, clothed in foliage all around... does that make sense? Btw, I have been reading a lot of threads about all kinds of rose growing and varieties, and I want to thank you all for sharing so generously from your experiences and ideas. Thank you!!!...See MorePruning
Comments (7)Shelia! I can't believe you resurrected this thread! How are you? I have missed posting here but with work, it was just too much. Well, as of April 1st, I retired!!!!! I don't have to go to "the wretched place" any longer! I just finished a week's worth of continuing ed credits to keep my state license and have been cleaning out the house to get rid of things. I am tired of clutter and no space to put stuff. If I haven't used it, it is gone! It has been lovely to have the time to do that. In addition to the great clean out (which is still continuing), I am redoing my master bath, updating my trust and getting my funeral arrangements done and paid for. No, I am not dying and am not planning on doing it anytime soon but if it happens, everything will be done and not a worry for those that survive me. I am currently working on catching up with the yard. It has done well in spite of my neglect this year. I learned a few things about pruning in the process. I didn't prune my Sequoia mini rose and it is just amazing and the blooms just don't stop and they last forever! I have been transplanting my Candice rose into bigger pots. I am about to take out my Eyes for You in the front and put in two small Candice roses. Then I am going to take out my Purple Passion (I think that is the name of the rose--which has the most ugly flowers when they are past their prime) and put in Plum Perfect. They are all small and it is supposed to start getting over 90 degrees again, so I hope they will make it. Front yard this year (at least the part with the roses) Back yard this year (at least the part with the roses) So good to hear from you! I will be posting more now that I don't have to be at "the wretched place!"...See MoreFavorite Austins from Spring 2017
