Calacatta Gold vs Calacatta Oro

Hi All,

I have a dilema. We are building a new home with a builder and wanted Calcutta Gold backsplash (herringbone and octagon mosaic) in my bathroom and kitchen (3x6 laid in a herringbone pattern) Overtime I'd search Calacatta Gold, Calacatta Oro would come up. They look so similar online. Just wondering if anyone has any advice. The builder could only get the Calacatta Oro and so now were almost ready to lay time and I'm afraid that they are indeed different. Anyone know?

Spanish word for Gold is Oro.

There are variations in Calacatta Gold depending on where it comes from and when it was fabricated. It is a natural product and not perfectly uniform. I went to many tile shops and all their Calacatta Gold/Oro looked slightly different. You also have to worry about store samples being old and not matching the current batch of stone being mined. Always ask for a sample from the current lots that are available for sale. They might have to order a current sample and you might have to pay for it.

Your builder probably picked the tiles based on price and not based on looks or quality. I would never allow a third party to pick my tiles!

Wow I didn’t know that! So glad to know it’s the same name! I I’ve asked to be there before install to look at all the tile so hopefully it looks as good as my samples. Thank you for the information!

Nancy-- have you tried Artistic Tile? That is where I bought my 4"x16" calacatta gold tile, and I think they carry a wide variety of sizes. The quality of their stone is excellent and they have some *gorgeous* calacatta chair rail pieces, but it's not cheap. Regarding the variation in price-- when i was shopping around, it seemed like there were so many name variations of Calacatta with different prices-- Gold, Oro, Extra, Calacatta Carrera. The more expensive stuff tended to have stronger veining and more rich brown than gray/black. I looked at several different lots of the same tile from the same quarry, and there was a vast variety of colors. I happened to like one that was more white than cream background color and had a variety of both brown and gray/black veining. I think my tile ended up at $17/psf. But I love it! HI All, great suggestions. Have not tried Fernandos.. and will call tomorrow. I've been to Marble Systems, but last few times.. the CG was more like Vagli .. but will go by tomorrow. I have been to Rugo, they have none currently, but were to call their contacts in NJ. One group today told me that the 'best' stuff stays up North .. NY and NJ - as they pay a premium for this marble. Road trip?

I found this thread when searching on Houzz for Calacatta Ida, just saying thanks to everyone for the information sharing! I have a few quartz colors by MSI that I'm considering (and a few by Cosmos). Since I think this thread is about a year old, I was curious if there was an updated list of the MSI quartz colors that use Breton technology, so I emailed MSI. After a few frustrating email exchanges (the customer service rep on the email had no idea what I was asking for based on her replies) someone from MSI called me and said they do not give out the list because it is proprietary information She said once I narrow down my choices I can email them a list of colors I'm considering and they will let me know which of those use Breton. She also tried to tell me that it doesn't matter if it uses Breton, all MSI quartz are covered by the same warranty, but I feel if the product is superior to begin with (and fabricated and installed correctly) there is less chance of something going wrong and needing to use the warranty! Plus in my experience, many companies make it very hard to use the warranty, they come up with excuses. Just my opinion. Again thanks to all contributors on this post, very helpful with my decision making! :-)

But the same name does not guarantee that the stone will look the same, similar, but not always the same. Different stores get their tiles from different distributors and different countries. A batch of Calacatta Gold/Oro tile from Italy will look different than one from India.

If he has the tile, I would go look at it long before install ... what if the color is way off from what you have pictured in your head?
