I can't take my step son much longer...
Comments (19)Frankly, lamom, if I, in a new relationship with a man who is depressed and a child who has multi problems and knowing this from the basic get-go, I wold have right then rethought my situation, ended the relationship and hightailed it for the next fish in the sea. That's not what I took issue with. What I took issue with was when you implied by your original posting with your indication that a person with depression 'choses' and went on with the 'whoop' good parent bit. Depression is not a choice. It's not a luxury that one can choose or decide to not undergo. It does not make them a bad parent. What would perhaps turn them into a bad parent would be when they fail to realize/except the disorder and seek help. In this case the gentleman did. He acknowledged he had a problem and sought out help which in his case included medications and theraphy. So many people either don't know what is happening, fail to acknowledge and seek out or plain are too embarassed to seek out help. What I took issue with here was when you appeared, by your wording, to indicate depression was something one could chose to not have and that if you did have depression, well, whoop, were not a good parent. And with your next posting you indicate with implying a person should think about not having the luxury of chosing prior to having children. My jaw dropped. I was really wondering if you did indeed realize that depression can and does strike at anytime and sometimes it's long after one has already had children. I think my objections had nothing to do with OP's case, but rather the simplicity you seemed to be applying to depression and it's extreme complex tangle with all that can go with it. I was pointing out depression is not something one choses to have, the choice comes with how the affected person deals with it. It's not a choice to suddenly one day wakeup and 'check out' , but it is a choice to stay there and not deal with it. As far as the OP, as I stated in this posting, I would not have stayed in this relationship and became as involved as she has, that was never my point of any of my posting in this thread. I wish the OP well, she has a serious decision to make, she's hung in there much longer than I would have, and I hope she thinks long and hard for what is best for her, her life and her own needs....See MoreCottage update: live edge coffee and dining tables
Comments (25)Nosoccermom, yes, for the DR table I expect the bark will come off with use. The table maker sprayed it with the same water based finishing as the table top, but the bark is still vulnerable. DH and I may finish the bark in a much stronger product to secure it more. And we should use a table cloth when eating. But regardless, on a table that will be used frequently I'm sure we'll lose some bark. That's okay I guess, the table will still work. ;) Robo, love that chair from Pier1. I never think of Pier1. I had thought I would go with a cheap knock off of the Eames shell, only $65 I think from EQ3 or Structube: But I think I prefer a tall windsor like the marcel. EQ3 sells the Lyla for $179 but I've seen these in person and they seem too small. I think the Marcel is taller. He are the Lylas: I've been keeping an eye on Kijiji for antique Windsors too. I'm a bit wary though, as the antique dining chars I've purchased in the past were a bit fragile for daily use. Just found these online for $179 each, locally made it looks like, but not as elegant as the Marcel. I will definitely head to Pier1 and check them out....See MoreRepair live edge dining table
Comments (4)In the roughly 10,000 pieces of furniture that I've repaired, there have been 3 that were not some sort of lacquer. Highly unlikely that any commercial furniture made after 1940 is shellac. The reason Pledge was noted was that its silicone oil will dramatically affect most finishes with a problem called "fish-eye" -- little craters when a finish is applied over the top of it. The lifting of the finish is most likely due to a crack in the finish that has allowed water to get underneath and compromise the finish. Letting it go is only get worse.. While there are lots of repair approaches depending upon materials and skill available, you've spent a lot of money on this table and I'd suggest not trying to do a DIY and really messing it up. Contact the seller and see if this is a warranted claim damage. If not, try to find a competent furniture repair technician. A repair might include excavating and inserting a "dutchman", stripping and refinishing the top, filling with polyester filler, epoxy, burn in sticks, or really thick "repair lacquer" depending upon closer evaluation....See MoreLive Edge Dining Table with White Furniture
Comments (3)If you have a "live edge" (very dead tree) piece of wood, it usually means the board was originally cut with bark on an uneven edge. Wouldn't, just wouldn't want that look for furniture. Some people, however, do -- and pay a lot of money for that look. To each his/her own. My brother in law had a sawmill before he retired. He had a board with a bark edge that very much had the shape of a fish and he hung it up as that -- as art. That uneven edge look -- with or without bark -- can accurately be called a "rustic" look. Heavy clunky painted white chairs could work with that. Smaller, more fragile looking white chairs are less likely to be a good fit....See MoreUser
