before it turned 2000, we had been able to say '84 or '24 without clarifying that we meant 1984 since we'd been using it that way since 1900. I assume there will be a time in the far future when they'll be saying back in '61 and mean 2061, but it won't need clarifying ;)

What really blew my mind back in the eighties? Working at an insurance company and all the birthdates for the "insureds" were assumed to be 19___, but we had a problem, repeatedly, because programmers were too dense to realize some people were still alive who'd been born in 18____, and entering them in the system was kicking them out. Hard to fathom!

In 2000, some people did say ‘the year two thousand’, and I did hear ‘two thousand one, two thousand two,’ etc. until we got to 2010. Then people seemed to gravitate to twenty-whatever. Maybe it’s regional like a lot of other words.

I use both, and also just the "teen" depending on the situation. When talking casually or writing notes I tend to just use the teen or twenty-teen. In formal situations like for banking or professional/business, I use two-thousand-teen.

My late FIL would often call the year as "...in nineteen and sixty eight," for example. He also deliberately kept an element of old-fashion Appalachian in his speaking voice, and I suspect that pattern of calling the year was regional to his birth area.

It's "twenty eighteen". I have never in my life heard anyone say "nineteen and eightysix" Or twenty and eighteen. Ever. That sounds ridiculous. lol

Twenty eighteen. Two thousand eighteen sounds very awkward to me and I never seem to hear anyone refer to it that way. I'm not sure why there would be too much discussion on this :-)) No one I ever encountered in my professional banking life referred to the year as "one thousand nine hundred and eighty" or "nineteen hundred and eighty".........it was nineteen eighty. Why change the program now??

I say two thousand eighteen. I guess it's just a carry over from 10 years of 2000-2009, since no one said "twenty-oh-eight" for 2008.

I say two thousand eighteen. I do hear people say twenty eighteen, but, as above, it sounds odd to me.

I say 'twenty-eighteen' but when I'm subbing with little ones, it is clear their teachers teach them 'two thousand, eighteen'. When I spit out my version, forgetting what they most likely have been taught, there is much confusion on their little faces. :)

In the early years of this century, there seemed to be more variety of what was said.

Especially among people for whom English wasn't their mother tongue, I remember hearing a lot of "two thousand oh oh five" or the similar "two thousand zero zero five".

I don't think that I ever heard "nineteen hundred eighty seven" (with or without "and") - it was always "nineteen eighty seven".

Now, I say, and almost always hear, "twenty eighteen".

Earlier, sometimes heard, and used, "two thousand and six" and sometimes "twenty oh six" but hardly ever "twenty zero six".

Twenty-eighteen. I have never heard people put and in a date. When you ask a person what year they were born it has always been nineteen thirty-four or whatever.

You know how we refer to decades as the 40s, 50s, 60s ? I often wonder when or how the 2000s will be shortened by future generations. At what point in time will it happen? Mid century maybe?

Really -- I'm still (practically) the only one? I can hear my FIL's voice now, "Yes, that would have been in the year nineteen and thirty six that Daddy moved us from the coal camp into town and ...." Unfortunately he didn't live long into this millennium but I guess he would have said "It happened in twenty and oh-four ...."

watchmelol, I've heard the first decade of this century referred to as the "aughts", "aughtys", and sometimes the "naughty aughtys". Mostly that was on a forum for a british band whose heyday ran from 1999 to 2005 or so. (Fun times!)

Either twenty eighteen or two thousand eighteen. Two thousand AND eighteen is an abomination. That sounds as ignorant as nine hundred AND forty three. I hear that construction all the time. It's nine hundred forty three. There's no AND needed.
