Lighting Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Please SOS help! A small guest bathroom

I love an elegant old style but my hubby prefers modern style. I have this awesome wood vanity with old gold sink. How can I match both styles using this vanity. Any idea? I am thinking in using silver and gold tile in the entire wall. Any idea? Should I have to paint the inside door side in brown as well? I would like to install a bigger plain top to vanity mirror and a light pendant light feature to distract the small size bathroom attention. Also I am going the change the floor and I would love to install a shower door as well...Do I have to get rid of everything? I just want to have a nice cute bathroom ;). Thanks so much for the brain storm, I'm feeling alone in this matter :(.

Hi Kenny, this is just me but I'd paint the inside of the door brown as you suggest. To get the modern look going, a fixture above the vanity mirror should do the job. I can't remember looking at any off the top of my head but I'd get something small.

Also, if you hang a pendant in there, your small bathroom's gonna look smaller. I'd minimize the objects in there as much as possible. You'll have more space and it'll look bigger.

You are going to want more than 32" for the toilet. 36" is standard (and perhaps even code in some areas???? Not here in Maine but I heard people saying that on other forums...) We have 34" and it feels fine but I dont think I'd want to go much tighter. You could solve that simply by flipping the closet and shower. So, have your shower -rotated 90 degrees and witha glass end wall- at the end of the tub (which is a nice setup you can see in many bathrooms, the tub deck can actually protrude under the shower glass wall and be a ledge or seat in the shower). Then the passageway moves to the left, and you can steal a bit of space from the other closet for the toilet. Either that of have a shorter vanity. 48" isn't a size I'd fight for. It's too short for a double vanity, really (unless you're using one of the new two-faucet 'trough" styles) so why not go down to 42" and have a better toilet area? For resale, though, you should consider a double vanity. Some people I guess expert truly huge ones, like at least 5+' long. But you CAN get smaller ones, Ikea has some great ones for tight spaces. But if you're not selling anytime soon, do what YOU like!! (But I still think you'll want more toilet space...)

Personally I wouldn't go for vinyl. It never has the right texture to mimick tile, and tile shouldn't be too expensive in a space that size. What is that little shelving unit to the right of your sink? It's difficult to help pick colors based on computer screen and picture variations, but I think the bold colors take away from your pretty tile. I personally like a gray-blue or gray color when looking at your tile. I played around with Sherwin Williams color and found these two as an example: All of these colors will vary depending on lighting and larger samples help make things easier to see. Once you settle on a few colors, get some sample cups and paint poster board edge to edge leaving no white border. Place it around the room and see how you like it!

In our master bathroom, we have the same soapstone countertop and same tile floor. However, there is lots of natural light. Maybe the same painted wood backsplash? The master bathroom has the black windowsill and and black floor trim but has the light grey walls. I like the white wall idea for the guest bathroom to brighten up a small darker room. If I repaint the handles on the door black, and add black hardware, would I also leave the floor trim black? Or have it the same white as the doors and windowsill/trim? Also, I'm trying decide a plan of attack! It seems like this course might be logical.... Remove the backsplash (but how do I repair the drywall so it looks good?) Paint the walls white Remove the wallpaper and then make a decision Finally, decide on what to do with the vanity

To get a modern feel with that vanity, i think you'll have to do the rest of the space pretty stark/minimalist -- maybe a silky medium gray paint and a very plain, maybe industrial feeling, mirror. Not sure anything else about the room can stay the way it is -- the vanity will really be the star, and all the art and color choices will need to support that. It looks like your flooring might need replacement anyway.
