Suggestions needed-landscaping to divide my yard from neighbor's

I live in zone 8b (coastal AL) and I have a neighbor who is having personal issues and he doesn't keep up his lawn anymore. At all. I'm sick of mowing our shared side. I started doing it to be nice (and to keep his weeds from maturing to seed) and I'm pretty sure it backfired and I've transferred his diseases and weeds to my lawn as a result from using my mower on both lawns. I'd like to create some type of border that looks nice and doesn't require too much upkeep. The best idea I've had is to create a thin, built-up strip planted with crepe myrtles and mulched. I'm not sure how it would look going all the way from the street to the back fence, though. I would like it to have curb appeal without dumping too much cash into it. If anyone has any other thoughts/ideas, I'd love to hear them. Please see attached pic. It only shows the front half of our lawns, the entire area to be landscaped/divided is probably twice as long.
