Comments (3)Those spring buggers pretty much *decimated* several flats of tender seedlings that I'd set out to harden off. They ate all curibits and punkins to a nub, Most everything disappeared virtually overnite! Newbie, do not succumb to thinking they are Cute. Lacking other predators - it's kill-or-Consequenseces. This time it's serious. Do not be fooled! It's now fall, and THAT means it's Slug-egg-laying season. As if that wasn't bad enough, the BIG boy hermaphrodites are having orgies on my property, and WORSE - they also out there devouring my WISC 55 tomatoes, just before they turn ripe. I'm drawing a line. Time to get out the Sluggo and dust the perimeter. I hope it's not too late, as I'm planning for more Dahlias in Spring, and I *insist* on a more diverse palate of veggies next season. The buggers got my multi-color eggplant & pepper seedlings, Okra and much more. I *will* win in '06! Hey mindsmile: Thanx for the Slug-bait recipe! I'm a cheapo & prefer not to buy bait, but I'm also among the many Oregonians who think using a decent microbrew on depraved Slugs is nothing short of Alcohol Abuse. No matter how gratifying it is to discover 5-6 bodies dead in one's pool of beer, that method just doesn't cut it in a prolific organic garden with ample mulch, compost and planting (er, Slug-birthing) mounds. Slug-Death it is. Survivors however, do have permission to winter over in my compost piles. By Spring, however, it's Last Rites for Sluggo. I'll be back....See Morespring photos 2014
Comments (14)I'll post some different varieties than are already here, but wanted to say it's wonderful to see varieties I have doing so well other places. I don't have a picture host, so I'll have to link to them one at a time. I'll pick my favorites. :) Keep in mind that there isn't a single tree that I've bought that was over a 2-year graft. Some of these I have had since I started in 2004, and some obviously in subsequent years. Many of these started as small as 6' tall, including their root stock! I'm a proud mama! This is my Okagami, in the ground in complete, unrelenting full sun for about 3 years now: This post was edited by CEFreeman on Tue, May 6, 14 at 10:56...See Morehave: kbx, oregon spring, 100s of others
Comments (1)Thanks to some generous seed traders, I've added over 30 varieties to my trading list (just updated). I've also reduced my "Wants" to: Big Sungold Select, BurpeeÂs Globe [hybrid?], Green Doctors, Manitoba, Marvel, Striped Pink, McClintockÂs Big Pink, Mountain Spring, Pink Accordian, Yellow Peach, and one paste tomato: Chinese Giant....See MoreOregon Spring Tomatoes
Comments (1)Yes, I have experience with Oregon Spring and the seeds germinate just as well as most other seeds to give healthy plants. Dr. Jim Baggett of Oregon State University, now retired, bred quite a few varieties to be used in the PNW where springs are cold and so fruit set is not good. All of them are what are called parthenocarpic varieties, which means that fertilization of ovules in the tomato ovary, seeds to be, is bypassed so the fruits develop, sometimes abnormally. That can mean malformed fruits and/or mealy fruits and in the beginning of the season there are few to no mature seeds within the fruits. When I grew Oregon Spring that didn't happen, but it just wasn't to my liking re taste. So by all means do try it and see how it works for you. Carolyn...See MoreSheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
