Ortho Brush-B-Gone is a good product. Many have talked about how to avoid a rash. Here is good advice from the FDA - http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/796_ivy.html: Because urushiol can penetrate the skin within minutes, there's no time to waste if you know you've been exposed. "The earlier you cleanse the skin, the greater the chance that you can remove the urushiol before it gets attached to the skin," says Hon-Sum Ko, M.D., an allergist and immunologist with FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Cleansing may not stop the initial outbreak of the rash if more than 10 minutes has elapsed, but it can help prevent further spread. If you've been exposed to poison ivy, oak or sumac, if possible, stay outdoors until you complete the first two steps: * First, Epstein says, cleanse exposed skin with generous amounts of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. (Don't return to the woods or yard the same day. Alcohol removes your skin's protection along with the urushiol and any new contact will cause the urushiol to penetrate twice as fast.) * Second, wash skin with water. (Water temperature does not matter; if you're outside, it's likely only cold water will be available.) * Third, take a regular shower with soap and warm water. Do not use soap before this point because "soap will tend to pick up some of the urushiol from the surface of the skin and move it around," says Epstein. * Clothes, shoes, tools, and anything else that may have been in contact with the urushiol should be wiped off with alcohol and water. Without pictures, we can only guess and my guess is the bluegrass. I say that because 20 percent is too much in a mix with tall fescue. It should be about 5 percent or this is what happens. Sorry your sod farm doesn't know that, but it isn't unusual for sod farms not to know things. No, it is not possible for the whole lawn to look that way, at least not for several years when the bluegrass takes over. For a more uniform-looking lawn, the sod farm should have mixed varieties of fescue and bluegrass that are similar in appearance. Looks like that is something else they didn't know. Tall fescue grows vertically in bunches and is a type that does not replace itself and cannot fill surrounding areas. It tillers many bunches, but they stay where they are in the ground. On the other hand, bluegrass has a complex root system that offers both vertical and horizontal growth. It spreads around the ground by its underground rhizomes to replace itself and fill in thin areas. It sounds like that's what happened with your grass. Another clue is there being so much clover, indicating the grass was not so dense or the clover would have no spots to grow into - or at least not so much of it this first year. Mixing bluegrass and fescue has always been done but is somewhat archaic in practice for your area - another tidbit the sod farm didn't know. Can you tell I like saying that? In upstate New York, it just isn't necessary when you can easily achieve a healthy and beautiful lawn of either species. Mixing them is better suited for areas of high heat, where bluegrass is less likely as sustainable as tall fescue but is still added for the filling in affect. If you want the whole lawn to look like that without the wait, you can always overseed in the fall with bluegrass. First, find out what bluegrass cultivar(s) was added to the fescue. If you had a contractor lay the sod for you, he likely will not know, but he can tell you the name of the sod farm he purchased from. Ask them. When you find out, let us know here what it was. Based on your clover estimate, I am also guessing you might benefit from a good maintenance schedule. Scroll down this thread to find the schedule outlined in red. Your cabbage and artichoke plants look positively wonderful, Xuan! They must love the humidity! I can hardly believe the cabbage is forming heads already! My veggie seeds, besides the radishes, haven't even made an appearance yet! We've gotten plenty of rain, but the raised beds dry out faster than the ground, what with all the wind we've gotten lately... they needed to be watered yesterday, for the first time this season. Due to the different soil types in different garden areas, some beds are still a bit muddy while others are beginning to dry out a bit... we have heavy clay soil in some areas, and others have been amended with compost, peat, topsoil and sand. A few areas are rather gravelly, as well, and I'm constantly picking out small stones and pebbles. The other raised beds by the barn were filled with a combination of topsoil and rotted horse manure... by next year, that soil should have broken down even more and become quite beautiful! I should still add some sand to the beds... maybe some peat, too. When I hear about overly dry conditions and wildfires raging, it's usually in California... I normally think of Florida as being humid and wet! It must be difficult to find edibles to grow that can take both wet and dry extremes... Mulberries sound delicious! When I was a kid, we had a good sized mulberry tree in our yard... we would pick tons of berries and enjoy them with cereal in the mornings! I've got Tithonia "Torch" seeds planted... I can't wait to see the flowers! Your bouquets of them always look so pretty, Cindee! And you're so right... fresh picked home grown fruits and vegetables taste so much better than anything you can buy at the larger grocery stores... most of the commercially grown food, unless it's organic, is rather tasteless! Especially the tomatoes! I look forward every year to harvesting fresh pea pods and green beans, tomatoes and bell peppers, and all the other delicious things we plant! Well I have given you a suggestion based on what is visible there. And I correctly surmised you had already applied herbicide. So did you check out pictures of Chickweed and compare your plant? I did click and enlarge the pictures but there is still insufficient detail to be certain of an id. Many plants have leaves that shape and for a defintie id we need quite specific and clear visual information. You also said they had 'stickers' and now you say they don't have thorns. Or have I misunderstood the word 'stickers'? Plus the herbicide has already distorted the plant so you aren't really giving us a fair chance. I suggest you Google Stellaria media aka Chickweed and see what you think.
