Cowboy quilt top finally finished

I finished the Cowboy/Texas quilt that I made for my SO. I started it in January.

This one was certainly a learning experience. The most complicated thing I had done before this was a Happy Blocks quilt. Getting everything to fit was the hard part. I didn't have a pattern, just a photo. Had I known when I started, I may not have tried. I"m still debating taking off the border on one side that is wavy. I cut it on the length of the fabric. How only that one waved is a mystery.

All the long armers are backed up, so it might be a while before I get it back.

I love it! and still forget to make labels lol! Babies love such bright vibrant colors, so why did they stick us in pastels when I was growing up? I visited our nursing home and, IMO, the residents are treated very well. Everyone knows everyone. They have a beautician that does manicures. One lovely lady had a very pale pink shade on and I complimented her on the color. She told me she didn't like it, the color was too bright for her lol. Another told me her favorite color was beige. It didn't matter anyway, I wasn't allowed to paint my nails, only a floozy did that lol!!!!! Thank goodness times have changed.

Congratulations on a job well done. I love traditional quilts and especially when they are scrappy from your stash. The border fabric is perfect to bring it together. If you don't point out the imperfections no one would notice. I love it. Jayne TFS

Great first quilt!!! Look on your batting wrapping and it will give suggestions as to how close (or far apart) the quilting should be. The one I am using now suggests 2". I am just learning to machine quilt (about 5 years now lol) and I love anything that doesn't have to be marked. With SITD it is sometimes not easy to stay in the 'ditch', but when the quilt is washed it doesn't show as much. The scrappy Irish Chain I am making for my sister is going to be mostly quilted on the diagonal. You can always mix it up and do different quilting designs. Have Fun! Rosa

You did a great job! Were all of the pictures from a panel? It is always a challenge to figure out a pattern when you are cutting panels/pre-printed fabrics apart to use in a quilt and you did an awesome job coming up with the design. Not sure what to advise about the wavy border - is it really wavy or just in need of pressing? Be sure to show us the quilt when you get it back from the LA,!

It's not my design. My friend gave me the panel. She bought it to make a quilt for her son, but age caught up with her, so she gave it to me. It's a Quilt Across Texas 2011 Moda creation for a shop hop I think.

The design was created by a quilt shop in Weatherford, Texas, a small town west of Ft. Worth. There was a photo still online a few months ago, but I can't find it now. The shop has been out of business for several years according to another quilt shop I called in Weatherford. So, with some help from a local quilt shop. and my online buddies, I finally got it finished.

I would give credit where credit is due, but I don't know the name of the shop or the quilt designer.

Wow, bkay, from what I see, you didn't need a pattern! I actually like the colors you chose much better than the blue. One of the things I do in trying to not have a wave is to not measure, but laying 2 strips together of border fabric in the middle of the smoothed out quilt top lengthwise, cut for the sides first, sew them on and then do the same for the width strips. That way you know each strip is the same length and they both are the same as the center of the quilt, Doing it this way also helps to 'square-up' the quilt.

Thanks for the hints, Sharon. I'll do that next time.

I'm not sure how that wave happened. It makes no sense. I cut the borders on the length of the grain. I cut them a little long. Sewed on the sides, trimmed the extra and then sewed the top and bottom. One of the sides is wavy. I'm not sure if I put a different fabric on top when I sewed the sides or not. I didn't change the tension or the thread. I don't think I pushed or pulled any differently on the sides.

I would take it off and re-do it, but I'm not sure it would be better. If I don't know what I did wrong, then I don't know how to fix it.

That is so cute and your original creation. You should be very proud. Sharon is right about the borders. You have to cut it to the exact length instead of trimming later. I've made the same mistake several times.

I took that wavy border off and re-did it. I took out almost 3/4 inch.

It was well worth the time I spent. Now, the quilt is just about as good as I can do at this time. I can't ask more..
