Comments (6)Blooms... You could always flush your container with the hose, let the water settle in the soil and let it continue to gently pass thru the container. This will disrupt the ant colony and make them flee... Then just make sure you let it dry out well before you bring it in. I would also move the container from the area where you have it so the ants won't return home!!! Just a thought.. I wouldn't use anything on my trees to get rid of ants. Like Emily mentioned, bait traps will work as well on the outside of the container... Good luck.. Laura...See MorePainting house to sell, what color should we do?
Comments (26)I agree that the yellow is charming and suits the house (I have seen yellows that are awful, but this is not one) so I would not paint it. But, if you must, then I wanted to say that I painted my house Glidden "High Tea" ( a sort of sage green-grey) with trim in "Bleached Wheat" by Laura Ashley, nearly black green shutters, and a red door (can't remember the color name) -- all mixed in Sherwin Williams paint. Ten years on I still get compliments from neighbors on the color. "Quiet Moments" is also a lovely color that would suit your house. BTW I was able to paint both aluminum and vinyl white trim around windows successfully....See Moreoh Butler’s Pantry, what should we do?
Comments (17)The best houses orient the public rooms towards the south for the best passive solar heating and cooling The best houses are L, U, T, H, or I shaped. The best houses are only one to two rooms deep. And covered lanai, porches, garages, etc count as rooms in this case. The best houses make sure kitchens have natural light, meaning windows so one doesn't have to have lighting 24/7 to use the kitchen. (And no, dining areas with windows 10' or more from the kitchen will not allow for natural light.) The best houses make sure all public rooms and bedrooms have windows on at least two walls. The best houses do not if possible put mechanical rooms, pantries or closets on outside walls The best houses keep public and private spaces separate. The best houses do not have you walk through the work zone of the kitchen to bring laundry to the laundry room. The best houses do not have the mudroom go through any of the work zones of the kitchen. The best houses do not use the kitchen as a hallway to any other rooms. The best houses do not put toilets or toilet rooms up against bedroom walls or dining areas. The best houses do not have walk in closets too small to stand inside. The best houses have an organizing “spine” so it’s easy to determine how to get from room to room in the house and what makes sense. So how many of these best practices does your house have?...See MoreWe’re painting but what should we do with these shingles? Please help!
Comments (16)Before and after. We are very happy with the results! In addition to the paint, we did a new door, said so long board and batten around the base and the corbels that were falling off, and bye bye to the decking. We also poured a larger porch area and added a brick patio to the front. Still need to get up on the ladder and get the last bit of blue tape off the window, but I was too excited not to post! One more coat coming to the shingles, too . We painted most of the house ourselves, hiring out only the tallest parts. Thanks to all for the advice and encouragement!...See Morechloebud
