I used a fabric (it's cotton velvet) that looks like an oriental rug. At a local oriental rug shop, there are lots of ottomans covered with oriental rugs - a great look and they wear like iron. I didn't do that due to cost - even this expensive fabric (Brunschwig&Fils) was less expensive.
