A Coffee Table Becomes an Ottoman, a Dog Cushion, and Tile ....

I have had this piece of furniture for many years, I bought it as a distressed coffee table for our family room when our kids were small. It fit together like a Cloverleaf, and each section had a door that could hide toys in a hurry if anyone came over :-) I wanted to use it in the basement because it is unusual and well loved, but what I really wanted was an ottoman. So I had the tops of each piece upholstered so each can be pulled out and used as an individual footstool, or they can be sat upon individually. I LOVE the fabric, which was also used for the dogs' floor cushion in the front room under the video games screen. (The ottoman will go between the two sofas in the back room.). The cushion was made exactly like the mattresses on the daybeds, which makes me very happy!

Our handy guy took the old brass hardware to a nearby town and had it replated in an antique finish

And finally, tiling commences in basement bathroom, vanity to be painted red next!

You had me at "which was also used for the dogs' floor cushion." Love it when the furniture fits the family, both human and furry. Your posted piece is very unique and handsome.

Farm chic, I like the overall shape of that table, but white would not work in this room. There is literally nothing white in this room, not even the ceiling! Kkay, you know, I saw a trunk/chest in a store last weekend and I was really drawn to it but it was just a little too small. If I could find the one I saw in a bigger size, I think it might be a candidate. Funky -- I think you and I could be friends for life. I have looked (online) at that RH table a few times!! It is so cool looking. I wondered how the metal would hold up, ie would it scratch easily. I should go look at it in the store. We had a round table in this room way back when... That's still a possibility although right now I'm thinking a long table so everyone can put their feet up, and probably putting the round red ottoman elsewhere. I'm not sure about the aesthetics of a round table, plus a round ottoman, plus the square ottoman that goes with the leather chair... Finally, abundant blessings, I knew someone would mention the position of that chair. I know it's not great, but the reality of this room is that we sit on that chair and that end of the sofa to watch TV. Also, if I pull the chair out and angle it more, it gets too tight with the end table and that end of the sofa (I've done it) and ends up looking more awkward. Eventually I'm going to slide the sofa down the wall a few inches in the other direction, but that entails moving the artwork, etc...so I've been procrastinating. That might help but probably not that much. Same problem with the red ottoman -- that's for the feet of whoever is sitting at that end of the sofa (don't get me started -- DH and DS seem physically unable to sit there without putting their feet up on something). But if I had a longer table, the ottoman would go elsewhere.

Yea Go with er-er-er's :oP Obviously we're a bunch of slouches with our feet up, but we're a team :OP Now in reality, I have a coffee table in both "living rooms" in our house and just would never go without. I don't often put my feet up (too short...I just go sideways on the sofa). In our family room, the coffee table is home to our third child (Thomas the train...without him we'd all perish). But it's a great table with two huge bins underneeth (look like drawers) which are filled with toys (or they're supposed to be filled...normally the toys are circling the table...I don't know how that happens). And it has a shelf just below the top which hides all the magazines I don't want people to know I read (because I'm sophistocated and stuff...People just does not fit in LOL but I MUST know who has the biggest butt on the beach...) In the library it's a fabulous antique box I took off a trash heap in a quaker church. It's late 1800's and lined with cedar to store their bibles in. I adore it. It's a big square with a leather top. We normally do desert there with guests and use it for the port and dessert service. But DH and I often each take a couch and light a fire and enjoy our quiet evenings (quite rare) there as well. I couldn't be without the table. It's really the center of the room. Do you want to hear a real shocker? In that room...I have NO END TABLES!!!!! Gasp! They just don't fit the space.

While I so appreciate the praise, I am pretty sure with a bit of guidance via blogs or You Tube videos, that all of you could do this. This project had no sewing except for the double welt. I REALLY lucked out with that coffee table for $25, and finding the perfect fabric. dlm2000, I'm sorry I missed your question on the welt 'flange'. It just gets cut away, after sewing the welt and before gluing it to the piece. I hope that blog I linked above helps. To sweet Lynn, and the other kind folks who think of my house as a jewel box, if you could see it right now, with my dining room table covered with an old plastic table cloth, and chairs, ottomans and drawers on it in various stages of 'done-ness', well, be afraid - be very afraid! My full time job makes it hard to get a project done, except for this ottoman, which was quick and easy!

This is not something I've considered! olychick - Thanks! patty_cakes - Glad to hear, I liked your comment about it not being dated (made me think). mtnrdredux - I make my little decorating decisions serially vs. in parallel (unlike other people who decorate entire homes in one fell swoop--no names of course!). No, I had just photoshopped a few dozen rugs and was paralyzed by indecision. Your comment reminded me to go back to my old threads and look some more. I think I have a decision, just need to figure out how true this color is. nosoccermom, finallyhome - Exactly how I feel (I am not the bargain shopper and am thrilled!) voila - I will have to darken the color to match the sofa legs, it is lighter than showing and I have yet to take a decent picture. So, clean up scratches and maybe strip entirely? I apologize but the donuts were inhaled shortly after photo was taken. emmarene - is yours as short as this? Thank you!

When I had the initial consultation with the interior designer I gave him all kinds of pictures of cut outs in cabinetry with dog beds. I wanted the dogs have their very own space. We didn't have room to do that either area, so ID suggested the cushion. It's not the cozy hidey hole I envisioned, but they already like it!

I took a better picture of the ottoman with one section pulled out, below, and tiling is finished, grout tomorrow am!

Thanks, Bethpen, sometimes I really overthink these things but Ihave come to realize that it's just my process. Even with design help I have to evolve a project over a year or so. I first contacted an architect about opening up this space about 13 months ago, although it would have been finished months ago with a different GC.

I am in total awe of people who can redo an entire room in the time it takes me to pick out a wall color!

I love how you've chosen your fabrics, rugs, etc so wisely and everything, including details such as the dog bed, have fit together and look wonderful! Just love how you took that old 'cloverleaf' table and made use of it again! Perfect for this space and for extra seating.

I love following along with your basement renovation! Your taste is wonderful and that brick floor is the main attraction. I'm interested to see if you have to seal it in the future. Love the ottoman and it's history, too.

Just got a photo of the painted vanity, painter thinks it may be a tad too orange... Hard to tell in photo, but easily changed if we need a darker shade.
