The majority of the most popular new nursery photos on Houzz show us parents and designers are planning ahead. Versatile grown-up design moves enhance rooms that work from babyhood through the teenage years. And the rooms are just as comfortable for parents as they are for babies. After all, parents will be putting in lots of hours reading, feeding and hanging out with the babies in these rooms.
Window Seats
This fluffed-up window seat can serve as a favorite cozy spot for reading as this child grows up. The railings used to display favorite books puts a focus on reading while allowing the charming book covers to serve as an ever-changing display. As the child grows up, the railings also can serve as picture rails for favorite photos, certificates and artwork.

This window seat makes the most of the thick walls around it with bookshelves built into the sides.
Like many other popular nurseries, this room features neutral colors on the walls, floors and ceilings that can take on different colors and decor as the children grow up and their favorites evolve and change.

Grown-Up Style
Versatile furniture pieces mean you won’t have to pass along the nursery furniture as your child gets older. For example, this dresser will go from a changing table to a useful storage piece this kiddo can use his or her whole life. The ottoman could easily make its way into any other room in the house. And the chandelier is a stunner.
Another popular and practical move is choosing a crib that can be converted into a toddler bed. There’s a much wider selection available today than there was just a few years ago.

If your child will be bunking up with an older sibling once they hit toddlerhood, you may have plans to repurpose the nursery into an office or guest room a few years down the road. It makes good financial sense to find a design that can serve all these needs. With its sophisticated millwork, wallpaper, light fixture, window treatments and dresser, this room will serve as a relaxing space for baby and sleep-deprived parents now and will be easy to convert later.
Bold Botanicals
This room for twins brings in inspiration from the woods, via vibrant branch wallpaper, a knotty wood ceiling and the color palette.

Soft Layers
Compared to the previous photo, this nursery is “woodsy-lite.” A range of textures make this nursery cushy and inviting, much needed for those 3 a.m. feedings. And another unique feature is the darling birds-on-branches mobile.

Murals
Of course, a nursery is a place to have fun and spark imagination. I think this baby may grow up appreciating geography after spending his or her formative years with this colorful map. Perhaps he or she will even become an explorer or a cartographer.

This nursery’s mural is three-dimensional, with stars, clouds, trees and hot air balloons affixed to the wall.
Animal Art
I could say talk about white, fluffy textures and glints of warm metallics, but no, I cannot take my eyes off that beautiful elephant photograph. Look at how sweet and loving they are. When searching for nursery artwork, animal photography is a great place to start. It’s appropriate for kids yet is not too babyish and can be enjoyed for many years.
Note: When hanging anything over a crib, take care to make sure it is securely affixed to the wall.

Shabby Chic
Rachel Ashwell’s signature style is still popular after all these years. A mix of creamy whites, pale pinks, glints of mirror and crystal juxtaposed with a little rough peeling paint gives this room Shabby Chic comfort.

Awwww I think they are all cute and some even sophisticated. Nice rooms for the parents to hang out with their little one(s). I don't think we ever had a nursery in our family. All the old photos show THE crib (same one for all 3 of us kiddos) in each of our rooms we had until we left home. From what I see, the only difference was the bed and once or twice new wall paper. All the diaper changing was done in the regular bath. The radiator had a platform on it. That's where we were plunked for diaper changing. At least it was warn in the winter. I saw a pix of one of my brothers getting diaper changed on a regular bed. LOL
When my best friend had her first child (boy), she & her hubby were still in college and they had a one room apt. The baby slept in a dresser drawer. It worked nicely.
Hi Becky, Love your idea book! I am struggling to find good teen girl bedrooms on Houzz. Would you consider an idea book of these? With the expansion of Houzz into marketing and sales, my searches are returning lots of sales pitches, but few great design ideas! Reaching out to our family's favorite Houzz contributor to make this special request. Thanks in advance! Your fans in Nashville :-)
@newideas, are you searching under "Stories?" There are a lot of great teen bedroom stories with some really creative ideas. My favorites included a big tree branch adorned in lights and feathers, a room inspired by a girl's fashionista grandmother and one with a boho daybed with netting overhead. I like searching without gender because good design ideas don't have anything to do with gender for the most part!
