Here in So. Ca. it's about $2-400 for the chair. However, might be more if you require new tying of springs,and/or all new foam/down. 10 yds.will probably do both, depending on how large the pieces are. Sounds like a wonderful deal, and having your mother's chair makes it special. Hope you'll show the end results:>)

Around my area it would be minimum 1500.00 . I paid that just for slipcovers for two sofas.

Given the age of yours and the most likely need for some refurbishing, in my area it would run more than $1000 for the chair. Incidentally, slipcovers in my area more expensive than upholstery.

Probably about $600 for the chair 3-400 for the ottoman depending upon the cushion.

jejvtr, many times an upholsterer does not allow one to provide their own fabric because they make a profit from ordered fabrics. Before hauling the pieces in, call and ask questions. When I would price pieces, I absolutely needed to either see the pieces in person or a picture. Upholstered pieces vary wildly...tufting, attached backs and just little details that many don't think about that could drive up the price of labor. As one other mentioned, repairs factor in, too.

I have paid $350.00 for both several years ago. And $400.00 for a large sofa not too many years ago. But it was a lady and her husband that did the work, not a company.

All of us should find these sources since we all love to decorate and then change it again. lol

I found that reupholstering costs about the same in CA and in KY where we now live.....about $400 for a medium sized chair (if you provide the fabric) Ottomans are about $200 depending on size.

Many upholsterers will give you an estimate over the phone - you tell them the measurements of your piece and the details you want done (boxing, skirting, tufting, etc.), and they can give you a ballpark figure.

Although I've heard that some upholsterers will charge you a fee if you don't buy your fabric from them, I've never run across one yet.

I'm having a chair and ottoman ( a bit larger than a club chair -- Pennsylvania House Elizabeth or Anne if I remember correctly) covered for $525 -- 350 for the chair and 175 for the ott. I did not buy the fabric from the upholsterer, but the last time I had a chair covered from a different upholsterer, I was offered a better deal if I chose one of the fabrics that they kept in stock.

Wow, I think I may be getting ripped off. Just this weekend went to Calico Corners to get a quote for 2 chairs. They are quoting me $573 & $531 PLUS fabric. Both take 8 4/8 yards of fabrice. One chair has tufting (9 to be exact) and no skirt; and the other chair has a skirt. I don't know where else to go and I don't just want to select someone out of the phone book. I did that once on a couch. It looked beautiful when the upholsterer brought it back - until I looked at the back and it seems as though he had run out of fabrice because the skirt was shorter in the back than on the sides! I felt that if I had used a reputable company (Calico Corners) I would have had some recourse but this was just an old guy doing upholstering and - I know this is pathetic on my part - but he was so proud of the couch I couldn't bring myself to say anything!

kathya. My experience is that Calico Corners subcontracts out to small, excellent quality, shops -- and marks up the cost a bit to do so. If you don't have a good referral network, you might feel safer using Calico Corners. Consider it an insurance policy.

deltabreeze. That is a good way of thinking about it - as an insurance policy - because I don't have any kind of referral network whatsoever and I would literally picking one out of the phone book! I told my husband Calico C. is more $$$ but he said it is worth it just in case we have a problem - like a short skirt.

I was quoted 300 for slipcover an 8'sofa. For upholstery would be between 300-400/sofa. This place also quote me only 10$ to sew a throw pillows from any fabric.

There are places that quote the same job for a lot more, like 700-800/slipcover. You just have to find the right place.

A chair would be 150/each for basic chair. Difficult chairs like French bergere probably would cost more.

I just paid $1,600 for my antique sofa and chair, and then another $800 for my fainting couch, but all of these pieces needed some structural work. I did them myself last time. I was glad I got them professionally done this time. You sure got a great price on the fabric!

I paid $1150 for a club chair and storage ottoman. Looking at the prices here, I should have shopped around a little more.

Down here in SC, I have paid $150 for an ottoman and $200-250/piece for arm chairs with skirting. Like you, I have brought in my own fabrics that I bought at discount stores or sales (love those!), which has saved me a bundle as the fabrics at the upholsterer's workroom are extremely expensive. Even if the prices went up $100 per piece to recover, I think it would be worth it (at least to me-as I have no DIY skills what-so-ever when it comes to working with fabrics).

Definitely shop around for upholsterers. I ended up working (numerous times) with an upholsterer that I thought I could never afford because of the location (right in front of two upscale resort islands). They ended up being cheaper because they have a TON of business, are known for their solid work, but also let you know that you won't get your pieces back next week. You have to be flexible with when your things can be delivered, which was fine by me.

I originally had pieces recovered through Calico Corners. I met the person who did the work and found he has his own business and doesn't work solely for CC. Now I just get the work done by calling him directly and supplying my own fabric. It's a lot cheaper to do it this way.

where do you get your fabrics and how do you know what kind of fabric to pick out? Our Joann's has a section with upholstery fabric - but I 'spect there are some stores over in Mesa or so that are just upholstery type fabrics. would be better to go to a specialty store?

I have 3 chairs and a sofa to get redone next yr or so. don't even know what color I want on them yet tho. will wait til new place put together to decide that. the sofa is one with a curved back and sets up on little (skinny) curved wooden legs (6 I think). it's from my MIL's house from over 30 yrs ago. I think it might have come from her mother's or her MIL's house. that'd be back in the early 1900's.
