Paula, I didn't realize your citrus were in 14" pots..How large are the barrels? Still, I wouldn't repot at this time of year. Wait until spring, then if roots are sticking out of their current pots, and barrels aren't overly huge, you still may be able to repot in them..The problem is, most barrels I've seen are huge..once a plant is potted in one, it's going to be very difficult moving. And again, I don't think citrus will make it in your zone during winter months.. Then again, I'm unfamiliar w/your climate..if there are only 4-7 days of icy temps, you might be able to accompish planting trees in the ground..I talk to 2 women who own citrus nurseries in Fl. some nights drop below freezing..they cover trees on these cold nights, and trees survive..but it's questionable..they also have warmer temps during the day to compensate for the cold nights.. Citrus fertilizer..You can find it on Ebay, and some nurseries carry it. Some Home Depots sell it, too. Since winter's approaching, there's no need to fertilize now. I have 2 types of Citrus food..one bought here in IL, the other online..A slow-release granular feed. Sprinkle and water, lasts 3 months..But Epsom Salts are supposed to be good too, as is Azalea fertilizer. I used to use Azalea food on my citrus before getting hold of the real thing. And here in IL, it's a lot easier finding azalea food than citrus. Do you have Fish Emulsion lying around? I use it as a scale preventative before bringing citrus indoors..it's also a great last foliar feeding..1 capful per 16oz mister of water..spray citrus thoroughly. I must warn you, it does have a fishy smell, but if you spray a couple days before bringing inside, the odor should be gone, plus they now make an odorless type. FE can also be purchased on Ebay at great prices. If you're interested in purchasing more citrus, I know a guy who owns a cold-hardy citrus nursery..I can give you his addy if you'd like..Prices are great, too, and what you get are 2-3' trees..at least that's the size I got when I ordered from him. That is a beautiful greenhouse. I enjoy more sweet flavored citrus (like navels) rather than tart (like grapefruits). But I pretty much love all oranges and mandarins, only like lemons and limes for cooking and aides, and am indifferent toward grapefruit. I love the staple of navels: Washington (aka Parent navel). It however has a wide range of flavor quality depending on where it's grown and especially the night temps during ripening. (As you are probably aware, most citrus, stone, and other fruit tree flavors are largely determined by acid/sugar ratios which are established during cool or chill hours.) I also love the flavor of Clementines -- but they are actually close to tasting and having flesh like mini-navels. I like Satsumas even though they are slightly more tart, however they have extremely juicy with minimal flesh cells and minimal pith, so it really makes up for it. Some Good Resources There is some great reading material, albeit somewhat technical and many times focused on commercial growers, put out from Univ. of Florida extension and Univ. of Calif. extensions. I've seen materials from other states, incl. AZ, TX, and even a couple from WA. Even Kern County here in CA provides good material for our local growing climates. Maybe you can find some for your area. I'm glad to find technical material from these centers because it seems like every book or guide on Citrus are nearly identical and their cursory style is suited for the masses. But with technical material also comes a need for background knowledge and critical thinking particularly in when recommendations are made because of the dissimilarities of their environment and yours. After reading citrus books in the library and at stores, you'll also realize not much more would be learned from that method. So FWIW, Here are some of the online sources I've used to educate myself on citrus. For Florida there is the Univ. of Florida IFAS Extension Site or go directly to their BULLETINS You can google or UF/IAS for the extensions document numbers: HS949 and SP248 that provide some OK rootstock information. Or the Univ. of CA. has a great Free Publications website. And the individual UC shools have their own sites that contain some unique (and many duplicate) articles. UC Riverside and Davis are big into citrus. The contraption below uses 18 watt CFL's. It has 12 of them. There is enough room for 16 *** 5 gallon bucket trees or one year i did 16 pepper plants in 5's. The walls of the box should be aluminum foil lined. This holds the heat and humidity in. In my case 50% of my heating bill is the meter charge before I use any gas. It cost just as much to heat with gas as it does with CFL's. Might as well grow beats, citrus trees and garden starts. If I lived in KY just 5 miles south I would not get that meter fee and it would be a waste of money. Might as well purchase my garden starts from home depot and buy my citrus fruits at Kroger's fruit department. Save my yard for apple peaches pears and plums. June 23rd my birthday comes. If you heat with oil, electric, or propane, It is no more to heat with CFL's. Might as well grow citrus trees in the basement. Pip is absolutely correct with his diagram for an open room. The center bulb can be remove with only a little loss to the trees. however if you use the container I use with the bright white/foiled walls you can do what I did. I was picking peppers 5 weeks before frost safe set out date. It really does pay to grow green and peppers in with your citrus tree with the $$$$avings in organic produce and tree growth advancements. Notice the beets on the first level to provide heat for the roots of the citrus trees above. We had a death in the family and my wife collected many memories. As a result we have no room anywhere in our house and we lost the ability to grow greens. The greenhouse is not warm enough. Heating the greenhouse is $$$$$$$$$$$$ out of the question. I've checked 5 costcos in in the last week (SD County), all trees are Franz nursery. Lots of lemons and limes, most oranges are Owari satuma or Clementine, dwarf and regular found but not both at the same store, with the odd washington navel, one tango didn't look so good. Only one out of four costcos had any grapefruit, star ruby and oroblanco I think (palamar airport) and some budda hand (escondido). I think I saw a Minneola Tangelo in one store. Several Calamondin and Mandarinquat in several stores. I grabbed an owari satsuma on unknown with a lot of young growth as I had no orange trees yet, haven't planted in ground yet, likes my cheap greenhouse enough to bud out in the week I've had it. I think the old pictures of W&N trees look a lot nicer for a cheaper tree, as the price was $21 before tax, but I still think what I got was worth the price. Was hoping for a Tarocco blood orange this year, but Franz has none assuming this is accurate (http://www.frantznursery.com/pdf/Frantz-Availability.pdf), and would explain why I haven't found any blood oranges.
