Your picture is showing up under that bred by Daniel not Renee. How long have you been growing yours? Is it healthy, vigorous favorite Etc? I'm thinking about it. Thank you for any info you could give me.

I contacted Helpmefind. They listed it incorrectly. Mine came directly from Palatine and was bred by Rene. It is very healthy and bloomed beautifully last year.

I will post photos when they are in bloom. The roses here have no buds yet, had snow 2 weekends ago, having a late spring. Mine were from Palatine too. I have 4, 2 got rabbit or mice damage, 2 are ok. I visited them twice last months, didn’t see this rose there.

Summer, that's what I was thinking too. Oh, well, I guess I'll have to go shopping for a new rose. Not a bad thing really, but my Zeffy was so big and beautiful last year. :-(

I transplanted a huge New Dawn and she's only now sending out leaves while her sisters all have huge buds. She needed more water. I suppose that's not your case however. My NOID Zephy did experience more die-back than I would have expected as I got it from my step mom in Maine. I guess I never inquired if that happens to her. I did lose Candy Land, but realize I never buried her graft as I intended to move her and just never did. : (( Was your Zepphy OR?

Sorry Bella. Is it own root ? My 2 old New Dawn (9-10 years old) winter killed to the ground too, one looks totally dead no new growth at all, the other one I spotted some new growth. The problem is I have to cut all the dead canes down, they are Kings of the thrones. A lot of my other ramblers I collected from Palatine have really bad rabbit and mice damage, no blooms this year. I have to dig them up and move them to the country. One of my neighbors in the country have a army of cats.

No, it was grafted. My Ramblin' Red lost 2 of it's 4 canes. With very little snow cover, this happens all the time, I've noticed.

I lost a lot of older roses. I am wondering if their time was up.....we had a lot of snow, but not long enough to protect them from the cold wind. It's very windy here by The Great Lakes. I noticed Cl. Caroline was gone, had it for years. Will check over all the roses tomorrow, I am sure there will be a lot of more gone with the wind.

I assumed my Zeph was dead too. It has been declining over the years. I made plans to replace it and bought the new rose and low and behold here come the new shoots finally two weeks ago. Here she was in her glory days in zone 5, here she is today. Course now I can't dig her up so I keep running around wondering where I'm going to put this new rose!

Thanks for the encouragement! I haven't cut mine back yet. I'm waiting to see what it does. I've not seen any new growth from the base. I'm giving her one more week. In the meantime, I did the same thing as you - I bought a new climber. I'm partial to the Canadian Explorer roses because of their hardiness, so I purchased the red climber, "Quadra". I'm sure that once Zeffy hears that I bought a replacement rose, she will now start sprouting! LOL.

HaHa! Exactly! I'm pretty sure my new shoots are Zephy and not root stalk. Always a worry when they are so late to come back. Hate to nurture Dr. Huey or multiflora for a year! I bought John Cabot to replace her with. Not an easy rose to find a place it will fit.

Bella, if you do remove it perhaps you could put her in a pot "just in case". : )

vaporvac, that's probably what I'll do with her. Like I said, I'm sure she'll start coming up by next weekend.

I checked my Zeffy again. She has growth, but it's so small, like one set of maybe 2 leaves. Bummer.

Bella, I'm zone 6a. Zephy is one of my more successful roses and I'm an amateur. She's been cane hardy for 4 seasons now. She has only leafed out no blooms as of yesterday. This is consistent with the rest of my crew as well. No flowers yet. For Z, I see growth starting in March when it's still cold and snowing and I worry. But every year she makes it all the way. I cut back all the dead wood. I had alot this year and find that every two years my plant will appear a bit thinner due to the cut back. But the years in between it's full. I'd say give it a chance you may have to cut it back, baby it, and sit it out this summer. Next year she may be back in full swing.

Bella if anything is alive on Zeffy give her some time to recover from the winter. I'd guess that only 3/4 of the roses that are going to sprout in my yard have leaves or growth from the base yet, even though some more hardy roses are fully leafed out and even putting out buds. The hardiness of the rose and nature of winter makes a huge difference in how fast they recover from the winter. You're right that poor snow cover is a big factor. We had a whopping 2" of snow cover during the worst of our winter cold and I'm actually having better survival of rose canes than in milder winters.

For Zeffy, I'd go ahead and cut off canes that are brown and dry, and not make the plant support them. A lot of my climbers die to the ground each year and many of them recover to a good 6-8' though not enough to cover an arch. I'm amazed that we have as many posts where Zeffy is reliably hardy in zone 5, since I've been unable to overwinter it even in my virtual zone 6 pocket. I'd expect it to always die to the ground in zone 5 when it survives. Quadra will be a terrific rose for you, though it periodically loses older canes that it's done with each year so you still do some pruning on it in spring.

Madakatude and Cynthia, thanks much for the advice. My Zeffy was only 2 or 3 years old, so young in rose years, I guess. I've gone ahead and cut off all of the dead canes. SO many. It's was very disheartening. She had grown to well over 8 feet tall. Now she's just a little stub. LOL. I'm hoping that we can some dry weather over the weekend and I'll be able to dig her up, pot her up and see how she does over the Summer. As much I loved Zeffy, I'm not a fan of a climber losing it's branches year after year. That's why I'm sticking to hardier rose varieties.

Cynthia, thanks for the info on Quadra. I'm supposed to get my Quadra roses tomorrow from Hortico. I always worry BIG time about ordering from them. I guess I've read too many horror stories. I've heard though that they have improved their quality and customer service, so I'm hopeful.

How often does zephirine repeat bloom in zone6? I would like sth that blooms at least every month til Nov.

ZD doesn't repeat well here, after the spring bloom, there are a few blooms here and there. I am in zone 6a.

I don't get a full complete flush after the first one but I do have flowers all summer. Mine in full sun. No shade whatsoever.

That’s interesting, none of us have good repeats on ZD.

My Zeffy is planted in full sun. Never had any repeat.

1 out of 4 ZD I had last year had a few repeats, and each time only had about 2-3 blooms on it, it was about 4-5' tall and 3' wide (3 years old, came from JP as a gallon plant). Toolbelt has over 40+ ZDs, he only gets a few blooms after the spring show. I think he is in zone 5-6 too. ZD is not really a repeater.

I’m dealing with the same issue? I have a climber (CanCan variety) and every year it would get bigger and bigger...grew very well..it’s on it’s 4th growing season, and not 1 leaf has sprouted yet?...it’s going along my ugly chain link fence and is now becoming more of an eyesore than the fence at this point! I asked if it looked dead to anyone..and I was told to give it time..and to try and prune some of the damaged canes down until I saw ‘green’ inside...which the entire shrub had green inside (showing it’s not dead) yet still not one leaf...it’s basically June, like ..what’s going on with the climbers?! All my other roses are fully leafed out...these are the only ones. Curious to see if yours ever shows any signs of life soon..

So glad to hear you're ok. tornado is no joking matter. Hope you don't have big trees in your yard. I used to worry about trees falling in my yard during storms, last winter we finally had 9 big trees removed. Feel much safer now without those sick ash trees.
