Why hasn't my Methley plum born fruit yet?
Comments (12)Scott has mastered the origin of plum varieties better than I, but Methely is considered a J. plum and Toka a hardier hybrid. Methely is hardier than any other red-fleshed J. plum that I've grown from my observations of cold related cambium damage. The more commonly grown J. plum in Z 5 NY is Shiro. Most Euro plums are somewhat hardier- also flower later. Peach buds have over a 5 degree differential of hardiness between flower and vegetative buds. One year my orchard got down to -22 and leaves were fine but not flowers. Same with areas not quite as cold as I believe -19 pretty much kills off flowers. Areas that got much below -25 lost their peach trees. As I recall the same thing held true for plums that year....See MoreEastern Redbud hasn't bloomed yet!!!
Comments (14)Tried a couple of the western redbuds once upon a time - my ex fell in love with them on a drive down to the Bay area one May. One succumbed to verticillium wilt within the year; the second one struggled for a couple of years longer then finally gave up. I've been in the nursery biz here for the past 20 years or so and western redbuds have never been very common.....in fact I can't think of more than a couple of times I have ever seen them available locally. If I'd have to pick a redbud for this area, I'd go with Cercis chinensis 'Avondale' - for the most part, Asian species seem to do quite well in our mild, damp climate....See MoreWhat hasn't sprouted yet (list)...
Comments (36)Hang in there Terrene on that Polemonium; mine just started germinating about a week ago (after I had STOPPED look down the sprout of the jug - do you think it's one of those "a watched pot never boils" senerios?!!!) I have about 15 containers out of over 200 that have not germinated. Some of those are "doubles" of the same plant (different variety or different seed source) and those I have pretty much given up on if the "twin" has sprouted weeks ago. A few (Like Toad Lily) were new to me this year and I thought they were goners and then "Wa-LA" sprouts appeared. I won't toss anything till Memorial day....See MoreWho else HASN'T started their tomato seeds yet?
Comments (28)tom8olvr, You were the one who told me it would be OK to start a batch of seeds today (April 13) after I got back from vacation, so according to you, you are not going anywhere in a handbasket. I'm starting Batch 3 today - my cherries and my "wispy" types. And I'm potting up Batch 2 today as well, which are about 2 1/2 weeks old. Batch 1 was started over 4 weeks ago and looking very awesome, but we will see if they get a little too big for their britches by May 16. Overall, my mad science experiment is 9 weeks/7 weeks/5 weeks from plant out, and a few of varieties in the 9 week batch are also in the 7 week batch. GWCW (GardenWeb Conventional Wisdom) says that the 7 week batch will do as well if not better than the same variety in the 9 week batch - I'll start posting pictures soon....See Morejc_7a_MiddleTN
