Thoughts on this rug

We have finally moved into our home. I thought the 8 x 10' rug I had would work, but now I think it's too small. I'm ordered a second sofa that is exactly the same as the first one and will put them facing one another in front of the fireplace. The rocker will go in the back facing the fireplace, and eventually I'll find a second chair to be next to the rocker.

Well I'm thinking I need a 9 x 12 rug or larger. I need to put tape on the floor to determine the exact size, but my question is what you all think of this rug for the space? The first photo is the living room. (Ignore the boxes. We're still unpacking.)

This is the rug I'm considering.

it depends, only the first legs need to go on. if you do not plan on entry between the chair and the couches may well work. love it though!.

Have you positioned the existing sofa where will end up? If so you should be able to tell whether the existing rug will extend under the front legs of the two sofas with adequate room between for the rocker and another chair. I like both of the rugs a lot!

Another vote for no rug. Little kids need open play space, a spot on the floor to sit and lean against the bed and read, a place for their friends to sleep in sleeping bags. Besides, honestly, you have carpeting, not a bare wood floor. Finally, to me, adding a round rug in the middle of the two beds and in front of the dresser, really visually makes the space feel crowded. One other thought, tho you may have already planned to do this. Consider used a fitted colored sheet (perhaps a navy) on the box springs. They will look much more finished, without the fussiness of a bedskirt. Cute space!

Be sure you get the right pad for under the area rug. My mother had a large oriental she wanted to use over the carpet in her apt - we went through several pads before getting one where the rug didn't "walk" or bunch up. I don't remember what we ended up with (she's been gone now for over 20 years), but I think it had a sticky coating on both sides. Talk to an oriental rug dealer for ideas.

It works for a retro look if that's what you're going for. Here are some alternate options. I would also check to see what type of bulbs are in the downlights. Make sure they are not R Bulbs. A Halogen PAR bulb could provide a better quality light for the room.

I like the second rug the best. And yes, you need a larger rug.

The colors and pattern in the proposed new rug look spot on for your home. I know that you moved in with the one Stickley couch, have you always been an arts & crafts style lover, or did it come together with this house project?

havingfun and Delilah, thank you. The rug definitely is too small for the sofa's. The only question I still have is if a 9 x 12 will work or if I will need an even larger rug. I have this one on hold and went to see it the other day. Actual size is 9" x 11'8". I may actually need a 10' x 13' though.

Thank you about the rug. The Stickley style couch is brand new from a Mennonite shop and they're making me another to match. Cushions are bone leather.

have you always been an arts & crafts style lover, or did it come together with this house project?

My first house was a 1927 bungalow and from then on I was hooked. I strayed for a few years to Victorian but realized I'm not that fussy. I just love everything about craftsman homes. The rug needs to go in the other direction, across the space rather than lengthwise as it is now. That may affect the size, so please measure carefully. The bigger the rug, the better the room looks. The second rug is a better choice since it has a color that is somewhat similar to the green walls. The way the walls are painted does tend to chop up the living room.

Ingrid why do you think the rug should go across the space when the length of the room is longer from fireplace to kitchen.

I like it but I can't say I love it. The only rationale I can give is that is looks a bit static & regimented to me whereas your home is filled with wonderfully edited surprise. Of course,in person and on your deeper floor with that light fixture above,my opinion could change in an instant.

I have a similar size family room, but have doorways on both sides of fireplace wall. My rug is 10' x 14'. I have 2 sofas facing each other and 2 chairs at opposite end of fireplace. All furniture is on the rug.

The pattern looks perfect for the new house.

Bigger is definitely better, but without being in the same room as the rug, it's hard to tell just how much bigger. Is the rug store nearby?

I think the rug you are considering is a great choice for your space. I am unqualified to speak to size/orientation. I have made way more than my share of mistakes in that regard.

Well it's near my NY home but not near my FL place. However I can put tape down to see the size.
