More virus testing information

I received word from Malcolm Manners yesterday that the following roses have been tested and found to be free of Apple Mosaic Virus and PNRSV (Prunus Necrotic Ring Spot Virus). These may now be called "virus indexed".

Annie Laurie McDowell

Nessie

Florence Bowers Pink Tea

General Vallejo's Yellow Banksiae

San Juan Bautista Niles Cochet

and the most useful news, Pink Clouds! All those years of Sequoia's efforts to maintain that rose free from these viruses worked. If you grow a plant of Pink Clouds which you have never budded ON to, you may now safely root it for stocks to bud other roses to and maintain their virus status.

I need to ask the California Nursery folks if they know whether or not CNC budded their plants. One thing is certain, this is a very old plant.

Thanks for the good news, Kim. Every little bit helps, lol.

I'm not surprised about ALM, but I'm extra-pleased to hear it. As for PC, I don't do any budding (yet), but it's still nice to know there's such a vigorous understock that is virus-free.

Now I just have to get my hands on SJBNC and FBPT. I know where I can get FBPT, but is SJBNC in commerce?

No. Darnit. It's NOT in commerce.

It's one of those roses that is a "watershed" rose for me. The first time I saw it, there were people sitting on the front porch of the house, who I swear had a shotgun. I took photos from across the street, with a 300 mm lens.

A friend was kind enough to give me a rooted plant from it, because we failed to root it and I wanted it so badly.

I've always thought it was likely one of the earliest plants from the California Nursery Co.

Hello, I am new to this forum and have been a hobbyist for about 5 years. Window growing with lights and humidifiers (big window ^.^) and now in the process of building a green house. Obviously no expert. Began with traditional phals...now I mostly have catts and have very good success with them. With the green house coming, I decided to virus test my collection of about 80 plants and 15 were virused; ironically, ten were the "failure to thrive" group I've been hanging onto and had little reason to continue after that. But I LOVED those plants just the same. The other five have CymMV and are doing fine quarantined. Nick, if your collection is fairly valuable and/or sentimental...WHY RISK bringing in these plants? My recommendation would be to take them ONLY IF you have a separate place to nurture them before you give them away to your family and friends. Denise

Call called them today to ask about the tests I did. I misunderstood the instructions, when they say to rub gently with something like a Sharpie, I was thinking flat like a rolling pin. They explained to use the point like you were coloring and make circles from the center working to the edge. They said the sample didn't need to be completely destroyed, the fiber just needs to be crushed. Not to agitate the bag to much because the solution will get foamy and effect the results. Also if the solution is to pulpy with plant material it can cause a false positive. I explained how I did the test and they thought my results should be accurate, although the control line would still show even if there was no plant material in the bag at all. The control line just confirms the strip is working. I'm going to try to test all of my plants and then spot check in the future. Thank you for the input guys. James

I read different news sources with different political leaning including some from francophone countries. That's not about "trust" but rather awareness of what people are being told. My basic orientation is toward math and science, but I'm cautious. Some goverments censor data. In places with limited medical resources and/or populations that are already challenged, cause of death may not be identified accurately or at all. Case maps are probably not entirely accurate, but they're good enough for trend analysis.

Sheila, I'm assuming it's Niles Cochet, just a clone that has never been grafted to a diseased rootstock. That would differentiate it from the one in commerce, but otherwise it should be identical. It would be more robust and vigorous, just because it's not infected.

Nice to know my Florence Bowers is not virused; on the other hand the small plant I received has so far steadfastly refused to grow. I believe I must hold the record for roses that do not thrive or, heaven forbid, grow huge in southern California. It can't just be me because I had a flourishing garden until the drought settled in but since then there's been a decline, and with the strength of the sun steadily increasing I suppose I should learn to grow and love desert plants.
