Solar powered light strip??

Hey Guys,

I've been looking into adding some lighting to my patio. I wanted to run some led light strips like these under my soffit. My question is how can I connect these using solar power? I have several solar spotlights so i figure there must be a way to use that tech for string lights.

I found something like this on amazon but i need to figure out how to do it myself so I can customize it to my needs:

Solar lights generally do not give off that amount of light, and are generally pretty under powered. You’d need a good sized solar panel or panels and a healthy battery or set of batteries to run lighting like that for a decent amount of time It just wouldnt be cost effective unless you had no other options.

You’d want something like this, plus a deep cycly battery, plus led lights that worked off of 12v.

Since you will probably using these at night, why use solar power (you will need batteries) and at Steve mentioned, this will not be easy. Why not just power them from your home electrical system?

My son got me some for a gift that are on the shepard's hook (which are metal, not plastic). I have had them in the ground for about 7 years. Where we use to live, we had very cold freezing winters and I never brought them in. Now we live in very rainy weather in the spring and warm in the summer, still leave them out year round. Have not changed the batteries yet either. They look old fashion, too. The newer ones he has bought me, with just the stakes with lantern on top (plastic), two have broken already. Hope this helps.

if they are 12 volt lights then yes, you can easily put a deepcycle battery as the power source and have a small solar panel recharge it. i have seen several kits like this before, though i have not used one myself.

I'm looking for solar-powered lights to illuminate my back stairs and sidewalk as an alternative to the blinding security light on my garage that I have to use now. I've found plenty that are meant to be stuck in the ground, but I have limited space and would like to mount them on a fence that runs alongside the stairs and walk. Surely somebody makes such a thing? Or can the in-ground lights be easily modified to be mounted on fence posts?

Yea I've been looking into it. It might not be worth the hassle of putting it together. A system like Steve pointed out might be worth looking into in the future.

There are many solar powered garden lights which, of course, are weatherproof. You would have to find some which are open to the sky and can also provide downlight for your patio; perhaps walkway lights might work. I bought some cheap "driveway lights" (ones that are designed to be run over) and those which weren't removed by the snowplow still work until fairly late at night. They have rechargeable AA batteries inside.
