backsplash end point when sink nearby

One of the tile guys who came by to quote the backsplash installation pointed out that our current sidesplash, far away from the sink wasn't how most people were tiling backsplashes anymore. I looked at lots of pics, and I agree with him that the backsplash should dissolve into the wall.

But I have two other, trickier areas.

1. The top cabinets end but the sink backsplash area is nearby (note: the 4" of countertop material will be replaced with tile). Do I (A) do what you see here or (B) end the backsplash at the top cabinet or (C) something else?

2. I believe I should be ending at the cabinet line, but what do I do with my light switches. There will only be 2, not 3, when we are done, but I'm not sure there is room for them on the wall surface. And is the door casing so close that it should be tiled up to it, disregarding where the cabinets end?

Who knew a backsplash was so interpretative to the individual?

Thanks, in advance, for any direction!
