HVAC Repair or replace????

Was interested in others thoughts here. I have a 13 yr old Amer Standard HVAC (heat pump/AC) 4 ton, Heritage 12 SEER unit. I live in a 2800 sq ft home in OH right on border of zone 4 & 5. It developed a leak in the outside unit and I am now being told ~$1000 to replace the leak and no assurance it wont have further issues in next couple of years. Recommendation is to at a minimum replace whole heat pump, ~$4000 or since the unit is 13 years old really recommend replace the air handler and whole system for $10-12,000. The point being that failure rate is typically the inside coils and they could go soon since avg life of a HVAC unit is 14 years.

So trying decide whether to repair or replace. I am likely moving in next 3-5 years and recognize odds are would have had to replace in that time anyway. As well as would make home more attractive with new unit.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Randy
