You don't say what room is next through the 8' opening. It could be important in how you use this LR. If you put the tv opposite the fireplace, try putting the sofas facing each other to the sides of the fireplace and tv. Put the coffee table between them. If you try this, then depending on the sizes of the pieces you move and how you like that layout, I may have some other suggestions for what you could do with your leftover spaces. I agree you may get more answers if you post at the decorator forum.

I've been under the weather for the last few days, so wasn't able to act on any of the additional suggestions until today. Thank you so much to everyone for the feedback, pointing out both the good and the bad. Today I moved a few things around. I decided to concentrate my efforts of lighting, as I think this will help us to enjoy the room more. The new additions are just stand ins, while I look for the right lamps and plants etc. I will also look for better wall art by the love seat and go to Benjamin Moore to look for a warm neutral that's lighter for the walls. I also liked the suggestions to replace the several small accessories with larger ones. And also to try to incorporate the window seat into the room more somehow. I was thinking of trying more colorful cushions on it, to tie it in and make the eye travel back there more. I will keep the points about the tables in mind for when it's time to look at new furniture. Thank you again so much! I feel so much better about this room already! Hi :) I am still here. After some drawn-out negotiations that didn't go very far, we decided it wasn't a good fit. House ended up needing a lot of work in addition to the roof - sewer leaking, termite damage, attic insulation needs replacement, tree removal, etc.

Thanks for trying to help. I will answer your questions which also helps me to think it through: no children, but visiting grandchildren. -it is not a new build, but a remodel of a 50’s ranch. The addition is the covered porch and the extension of the kitchen. -our “games room” (ping pong) will be in the finished basement. -my sense is that the family room is less formal than the living room and will be for relaxation and TV watching. Maybe incorporating a desk. -I could switch the family and dining but it would be an awfully large dining room that wouldn’t get much use as it’s just 2 of us most of the time. The addition will have large windows across the back. Lots more light than the room now labeled family. Planning a bench under the windows. Plus the new kitchen/dining will have a different floor from the rest of the house. If this helps and you have other ideas please share. Thanks again.
