James Galway, shrub or climber

My daughter ordered me a James Galway rose band for my birthday. I'm a former flute player and he's my favorite flute player of all time. I need to know, because I am getting confusing information, if its a shrub or climber so I know where to plant it. Thank you!!!

I have to say, that even though I've only had this rose since about January or so, I'm really pleased with it. It was the last of my DA bareroots to show growth, (all planted at the same time) but once it got started it really shot up and seems to be very happy and healthy. It's leaves are entirely green and beautiful, while many of my other bushes show some, I guess, salt build-up from my water, or crispies from the heat or something.... but not James Galway... it's leaves are gorgeous! and like I said, it's grown more than some of my other DAs. How it will do in other years, who knows. Even though it's it's first year, it's tried to bloom several times. I think the flowers are interesting and unusual, they have a bit of a pointed look to the petals and a complex bloom shape. It's not like every other "Mary Rose" type "old fashioned" rose, it's a little different. It's hot/dry where I am. zone 9-10. clay soil Here's a photo I took this month showing the growth since Jan. Gee, I don't know, they're both really gorgeous! I think PG is going to get taller and JG will be wider so it might depend on the space you want to put it in.

Dave,it sounds like we both have the same problem with James G. I feel like I have a parallel issue with The Ingenious Mr. Fairchild; this one I've tried to train it's not- so- rigid canes horizontally,around a tripod, but still,the plant does not respond by putting out laterals. Now, TIMr.F is admittedly in bad soil, but still...I just don't have one single Austin rose that i can say is truly satisfactory. They seem to all either 1) refuse to thrive (too greedy, needy, water-hoggy?) or 2)thrive as green plants, but flower in an awkward and un-satisfactory way. It's irritating and frustrating to see these plants being praised so highly by many,and yet, in one's own garden, to see them being mere primadonnas. The only exception I feel obliged to make is on the account of the un-sung, never-praised, Charles Rennie MacIntosh. This rose has been in my garden for many years now, planted when I had no idea of soil preparation,etc. It's in a horrible spot, with awful soil,cruel sun ,just disgusting. Yet CRMcIntosh persists, does give me some nice blooms every year,in spite of no supplemental watering or fuss.

This is the first I've seen this thread and it makes me so excited that I already have this rose. When Lilyfinch was moving away I bought from her several of her roses that she had received in the early spring, but realized didn't need to be planted before she left. Poor JG was a nub and hadn't had an easy time of his early life--I think she threw him in the batch I bought from her for her for free. I planted him at the base of my beautiful limestone chimney and it wasn't until late in the summer he seemed to make a recovery a got going. He should start with a few blooms this spring--we'll see. This thread sure has gotten my hopes up!! dianela7bnorthal I'll let you know how he does on disease resistance. I'm just north of you and I suspect we have similar disease pressure.

Hi! It's on the roses forum . It's not your fault .. there is some glitch that does this often it seems . We had one post come from the home decor area recently..

anyway .. how thoughtful of your daughter !! It's a climber. If you were in a colder zone I'd say shrub but in your zone , it'll most likely climb . Enjoy the rose !!

Great...lololol I have no idea where to put it. I wonder if theres a way to keep it in check...it was very thoughtful of her. I also LOVE romantica roses and she had no idea...she got lucky!! I also had a piece of it broken off when it arrived and it's rooted!!! So I think I am blessed. This baby is strong. It's been broken. Run over by a car (not sure how that happened because it was in my rose bed and someone ran over this one and another rose) but it didn't hurt it. Made me mad, but...

It got run over ?! Oh my goodness ! Well then it's doing great lol . I don't think it's a house eating climber . Just plan on it being large . I'm looking for one myself . I had it before and killed it by planting too late so I never got to enjoy it .

I've had two for about 15 years. I bought them as shrubs, but JG is really a climber, although where I planted them, I keep them as large shrubs - I cut them back in spring to about 4 ft tall. Sometimes in the fall, I have to cut them back again to keep from growing to around 8 ft or more and slapping everyone in the face. It's not ideal - I think they would be pretty as a climber and have often thought of letting them grow up that way, and where mine are it wouldn't be hard, but it would require me to climb a ladder, attach them somehow to the side of my house, etc., etc., and have decided that's too much trouble. So, I just lop them off hard. I think 4-5 ft is about as small as JG can go. Hope that helps.

Yeah, this is what happened to the plant it was sitting next to. Now. To figure out how to plant this one...because most of mine are in pots...lol
