We are remodelling our own home. We have a gas fireplace but we are moving it about 5 feet to the right. I think we can build this ourselves without any big problem. Someone out there has to have done this before. We know all about the exhaust, draft, et all. Just wanted some feedback from experience.

That's right, I probably used the wrong term. I was thinking of the "insert" as the pre-fab fireplaces that are common today, that are "inserted" in the chase opening. I have a wood burning one on the 1st level of my home, which shares the chase with the roughed-in one in the basement below. I want to know if installing the actual fireplace itself is a relatively easy job, or if it would be better just to have the guys that are installing the gas logs do that part too.

A vast improvement, although I'm not sure about the hex tiles for this application. Maybe I'm just not used to seeing them on a fireplace surround, although I adore them for floors!

Hope the picture posts, I've been having issues with that for a couple of days... but one of our fireplaces has some issues and no matter what we tried we were still getting a lot of cold air rushing down through our chimney into our kitchen eating are. We never use the fireplace, and to actually FIX the problem we have requires a lot of money we aren't inclined to spend (it's something about the chimney not being built high enough and the angle of how the roof lines intersect, if I understood things correctly...) so to button things up better my hubby cut some plywood to fit in the fireplace opening. There is some weather stripping on the backside, and the handle makes it so you can pull the whole thing away from the opening if needed. We just painted it white to kind of blend with what we have going on. Yes, it hides the logs and all... that's kind of a bummer... but now the room is comfortable again. Maybe one day I'll get my artistic daughter to paint a mural on it or something. I usually have potted plants in front of it. Maybe not the best solution, but it's working without bothering my OCD, LOL!
