Ha ha. I am sort of in the same boat. I planted a really big new flower bed last Spring. One corner I threw in a seed mix. Now that things are coming back, I have no idea what is what really. A lot of tags are faded. Some things seem to have reseeded very well. They don’t look like weeds, but no idea what they are yet. Some I know for sure look like milkweed. But there were so many different kinds... it’s kind of fun though. Mind you, mine is just a big colorful mess of a pollinator flower bed, so not much order required.

I must have really liked one of the "open" areas in one of my beds. In the same spot I planted a campanula on top of some scilla on top of some allium. I honestly only remember planting the campanula there... Good thing I love surprises, hope you do too!

I do the same thing. I just weed what I absolutely know is a weed, because in the past I have pulled out flowers. This spring I got a surprise. I had hyathens come up in one garden. I completely forgot I planted them last fall.

I do this every year. Labelling fails start before plants make it out of the greenhouse or seedling pots. I am scratching my head at the dozen alliums which have appeared in one of my pots...with no recollection of buying, growing or planting a.bulgaricum nectaroscordum siculum.

HAHA glad I'm not alone! This is unusual for me, though -- I've always remembered what I planted and where for the most part. But yea, surprises are always fun!

Next time I'll have to take a little more time to commit it all to memory

i used to put some rocks as markers in the beds ... and then snapped pix of name tags or seed packets in relation to the markers .... so i might review said pix in spring ... or even just some sticks that fell out of trees ... to mark a planting spot ...

the name that plant forum is brilliant for naming seedlings.. if you let them get to some size first ...

of.. i also planted in straight lines ... figuring random weed seed doesnt sow itself in straight lines.. so odds are... if i saw a line of a dozen duplicate plants.. i must have planted them ... and then i would move them around in fall to permanent places ... the sticks mentioned above.. marking the start and finish of the line ....

I drew a diagram of my garden with all the plants labelled. It's nice to have in the winter when I start thinking about changes I want to make in spring.

Mayflowers, that's on the list to do someday.

It's funny my planting space is pretty constrained and yet there's always room for a bit more...

I've learned to take photos so I can refer back to them since memory is unreliable in my case. Someone here on Garden Web many years back suggested that, and it works better for me than maps. I can print and label photos if I want, but most often just seeing the photos of the pots or newly planted garden is enough.

Been there; done that. Plant stakes, diagrams, and photographs are a gardener's best friend, but I often fall victim to the "Oh I'll remember where they are (and what they are)" mentality! Hope the growing plants will jog your memory. I often let things bloom before making the weed-or-flower decision.

Those bulbs that appear in places you don't remember planting them were probably moved there by the voles, squirrels, chipmunks, birds, etcetc. This year I have crocuses in my pathways.

I have a bowl full of tags from every plant I've bought over the last 20 years. Sometimes I go through them and say, "Oh yeah, I remember that one. " But where did it go? Garden surprises.
