How much damage can wild blackberries tolerate?

I have several clumps of wild blackberries that have grown up over the past few years. In some there was significant vole (or possibly mole or woodchuck) damage this winter. Several canes got stripped for as much as a foot above the ground (how anything could chew through those huge thorns is a puzzle to me). Is there any hope of those canes surviving to produce fruit? (Whatever animal it was chose to chew on some of the best canes.)

Thanks
