Please help me with my new Banana Plant? (pics)

I have never grown one before and have no idea how to take care of it. I would like to know what kind of Banana plant it is? I inherited this from a neighbor a couple of days ago, who had recently put it into its' 'current' metal pot.
I know it must like sun, but last summer, another neighbor had one and all the leaves burned on it. So, where should I place it, in the sun or shade? Should I fertilize it? If so, what should I give it?
What kind of exposure would it like? North facing, south, east or west. Morning sun? Afternoon sun? How often should I water it? This plant is about 14" tall. I posted a couple of pics, You'll see there is also a lily in the pot, but I'm going to remove that. Should I put the banana plant into the ground right away or maybe put it into a smaller pot with drainage? This pot doesn't have a hole in the bottom whatsoever. Thanks so much in advance for all your help.

Comments (16)"I'm not sure I agree with the idea that the lawn MUST be re-seeded, unless the OP has decided he wants a KBG lawn. The Perennial Rye that was in the original mixture will eventually predominate over the KBG, so he will end up with a mostly PRG lawn. Some people do go that route. Not sure what the recommendation is for upstate NY." The perennial rye cultivars in that mix do not spread. Any bare areas now will be bare in the fall unless some of the KBG made it and starts to spread. I said anything that survives into the fall should do well, but how much grass is left at the end of August is anyone's guess. There is nothing wrong with a PR lawn, they look great, and are easy to overseed if need be. Upstate NY is KBG country, and if it gets too cold PR can die off due to cold kill, but I have read this isn't as much as an issue as once believed. I happen to think monospecies lawns are easier to start and take care of regardless of what type you pick. My whole point is this; 2500 square feet isn't a lot of area to seed again. Most of the work has been done. Instead of having a weed filled patchy lawn, kill everything and do it over. I am tired of picking up yellow leaves off the floor dropping from the main plant. Do you think it will be ok? Dave: Exactly how my plant was growing. In a huge office window flowering like mad until people decided to just let it go..I feel so bad for it. Taking it home is not easy either since I haven't a window even close to giving it sun like it was use to recieving. So I ordered a greenhouse..lol.I hope it makes it till then. Comments (8)Thank you so much for clarifying the plant types. I will try to close the AC openings on top of them. I might actually take your advice about the Cycas Revoluta (which I thought was Areca). I think there's also another reason that this plant isn't pleasant indoors. I've been pricked about a dozen times to the point of bleeding. The tips are EXTREMELY sharp like needles. It was a nuisance cleaning it today. In this case, I'll keep the Ficus, Dieffenbachia and Aloe in. The picture is dark I agree. The lighting is a bit tricky because there's a huge tree growing right in front of my balcony and I refused to cut it because it has been a cozy home for a bird family for years now. It's filled with nests. The rays you see in the picture is what I normally get- sun peeking in between the branches. The sun is very hot here in the Middle East so I'm also afraid it might burn them. It's also funny how during the day, I keep shuffling them in order for each one to take its dose of sunlight. If, in your opinion, this is not enough sunlight, then I'll move them to the other window (which completely conceals them in the room) but maybe I can keep them there for a few hours while I'm at work and then when I come back I'll move them to the other window. Comments (3)You sound like an overprotective mom. Rain is not going to hurt a banana plant. Not sure where you are, but mine get hosed down every day (even with the forecast of heavy rain). COLD and wet is not good for bananas. But in heat (90-72 temp range here), they love rain..., just not standing water. Heck, come to think of it..., I have even seen them grown as bog plants (like Canna). Liberate them!...See MoreGarden Mist
