One foot width is so narrow you might be best off building a tall trellis and planting an evergreen vine. Those below look custom built, but you can buy 4x8 ft trellis panels and sandwich them between upright posts for a similar look. While there are some tall, narrow shrubs that might work such as Cupressus sempervirens "Stricta" or Juniperus virginiana "Skyrocket", most will eventually get 2 to 3 ft wide and will take years to grow tall enough to begin to give any privacy.

Do you enter through the front door or through the garage? To me, that would dictate how the space should function. I enter through the front, so I would at least need a catch all for keys, sunglasses and a space for my purse. If this going to be primarily used for guests, then I guess I would just put some pretty things here. There's no color in any of your photos. Maybe do a bold wall or art piece that really says something.

I read the Q&A for NuWallpaper. As @User stated, the most important thing is the quality of the surface which must be smooth, painted and untextured. I'd put effort into preparing the surface: spackle, sand, paint ("pretty old beat up" isn't the right surface for success). If the wallpaper fails, it appears easy to remove and replace. Maybe set aside some extra in case that happens.
