Flooring Design Dilemma Fireplaces

What color tile should we use for the hearth in front of the fireplace

Hey Guys!

We are adding a tile hearth in front of our fireplace and we intend to list our house on the market next week - we just want the fireplace to be up to code and safe.

Here's what it looks like now and here's what our backsplash is in our kitchen. Should we match it since it is an open room from kitchen to the fireplace? Or should we pick something with colors more similar to the flooring or fireplace bricks/wall color? We just finished replacing all the trim and baseboards and doors to white and two-panel. There is no more ugly brown trim or doors from the 70s.

Easiest would be to match a similar tile to the backplash; I just want to make sure you guys don't think it would look bad. It will come out 18 inches from the fake brick and line up with the brick with 45 degree corners on each side.

Match the dark trim around the firebox - slate might work.

I agree with decoenthusiaste -- pull a color from the fireplace - the trim or the brick surrounding it.

I have seen some beautiful Limestone that can be polished. I was looking at a single piece instead of 3 or more other types of stone being mortared together for the hearth. Salesperson says will cost more though. About $250 and up for the limestone hearth.

Thank you all again for your feedback. I think we decided to go with tumbled travertine in a white/beige color for the backsplash instead of the brick. Couple questions: - For a small space would you recommend small brick shaped tiles, brick shape and size tiles, or square tiles? We don't want to do the real thin tiles. -We are thinking about square porcelain floor tiles, placed in a diamond shaped pattern because we understand that will make our small kitchen appear bigger. If we do a square tile backsplash would you place them in a diamond pattern as well to match the floor pattern? -We are thinking of a medium beige color floor...the floors we have are original to the house and have to go! We can't do wood because of the way the kitchen is laid out with the rest of the house where we already have wood. Thanks in advance!

It looks fine. Black is SEVERE looking and looks DUSTY all the time. As in ALL THE TIME! A low gloss black looks dusty because it is low gloss. A high-gloss black looks dusty because you can SEE the dust...Every gloss level of black looks dusty. Every day. All day. The beauty of neutral coloured stone with a bit of movement is: you can't tell if they are dusty/dirty or not. And that is a major blessing. Finish the surround in the stone tile you have picked and enjoy your new space. You will be happy you did. Just relax. You've done a fine job.

What room is this? Dining Room???? I have been watching Escape to the Country the British equivalent of House Hunters and most would kill for such a lovely feature in their home. I would use gas logs that are lifted off the floor using andirons and add all the other accessories appropriate for this type of fireplace. I'm guessing you might be living in some type of colonial style home.

I agree. Match or compliment the brick/fire box. Make this as seamless and unobtrusive as possible. That's the easiest way to prevent the eye from picking out "after thought" projects/fixes. Too bad you can't use the faux brick in this application.

I would like to say "Koodos" for bring the fireplace up to code before listing. Not everyone would do that! What's the current flooring? Is that vinyl, laminate, engineered hardwood?
