Comments (25)Moc, I think the OP can check your zone, no worries. I was just trying to indicate another perspective for choosing your must have hosta. Bkay, I never said "disqualifier," I said "consideration" and noted that I had PUC despite the fact that it is on the list. I know some people run out and put pots over their early risers during late freezes, one just has to decide if its worth it for that particular plant, or is there another that would fit the bill without the extra maintenance. In zone 4 you have more options than zone 8. There are also several fragrant hosta that aren't so early as compared to others. Remember the OP wants to top out at only 100 or so hosta. Comments (63)Do try GE in a pot windymess. I started with mine in the ground. It grew steady but quite slow. One day I decided to experiment by placing it in a pot and moving it to a brighter location with midday sun. That really helped. Since then, I've kept all my GE's in a pot. I think every photo on this thread of GE is pretty. (And thank you for the compliments on my GE.) Even as a small plant, GE is very attractive. You can't say that about all hosta. Some hosta need to "grow" into their beauty. One thing I did notice about GE is that if it does not receive enough sun, it will have a slight greenish coloring to it in the summer. My garden is quite shaded so I have to make note of the areas with the most sun....See MoreCan you tell me what your favorite mini/small hostas are?
Comments (29)I love those pictures lindalana! Your Teaspoon is huge and cute! Thanks nshosta and Don. Dhaven, you have provided a wonderful list! Madplanter, thanks for adding to the list! And look at this list! I tried my best to put it all together---for myself and for others. It's amazing---thanks to all! Allan P. McConnell Appletini Baby Booties Baby Doll (really cute! Maybe unstable?) Bedazzled Blue Jay Blue Clown BME (I forgot about BME too. I have it!) So what did I chose? And you can imagine how hard that was! For the larges: Amalia (who could resist Donna's photos?) And Ooh La la. I have never been able to forget that one ever since seeing it at a garden tour. I don't think its a good grower, and I haven't seen anyone posting photos of it. But I just got to try it out for myself. For the smalls I got: Stilletto, Lakeside Down Sized, Hush Puppie, Mini Skirt, Church Mouse, Hyuga Urajiro and Curly Fries. Some of ones on the list were not available or sold out unfortunately. I wanted Teaspoon (sold out)! I love the list and I will use it when shopping again for smalls and minis. I had to really stifle myself and not purchase all that I wanted. I began purchasing minis last year and had a few losses so I am not feeling very confident in my ability to grow them....See MoreOctober in my hosta garden
Comments (117)Utog, it is so nice to see your garden still full of color! Mine only has my declining Limelight Hydrangea, autumn joy sedum and burning bush. All the leaves are falling everywhere too. Today I cut back the few hostas remaining and dug out the pepper and tomato plants. Love the Carmillas you have......do the need full sun? Will we see your garden in November? debra...See Moresteve duggins(Z6a) - Central Ohio
