can I keep my new orchids outside in the shade year round?
Comments (25)If I remember right, Olya grows them outside in the Tampa area. Someone remembers me! :) I have not posted in forever and decided to check out the site today I DO grow outside, in Tampa (Temple Terrace), year round. In Florida, it is way too tempting to grow orchids inside, since, as Gary said, we have 10 months of good orchid weather I have a structure with 50% shade cloth on it - lots of light From Orchids May 2009 In winter I cover it with plastic - takes two people to do that ...On cold nights, I turn on a heater or two in there. Any temps above 45, I am not worried, not even for phals... With a few plants, growing outside in Florida is a way to go. Give your phals lots of bridge diffused light; the dendrobiums will need a lot more light than that......See MoreOh no! Another plant addiction, Orchids!
Comments (27)Smiling, you've already started to get the "eye" - well done. The orchid in question is partially a "why not". It is Stlma. Florida Sunset (B. Maria del Carmen X Ctna. Why Not) This is an awesome cross. I've had it a few years and it will not stop blooming, ever! I've wanted to repot this pretty for the past two years but everytime I start thinking of doing it - out comes 10-20 more blooms so... it's happy so I'm happy. I don't think you did anything wrong, it may have been a multitude of reasons it didn't last long - traveling to the show, exposure to different heat/cool ranges, recently repotted (as you have surmised), etc. Take the approach/attitude that it is external and not something "you did wrong". We all do "wrong" but orchid growing is a learning process. I've been exposed to them for over 40+ years (I'm 51 now) and I still have MUCH MUCH more to learn (smiling). Comments (11)I don't know, but I hope the best for them. I had my phal orchids out of their pots for like a week letting them air and stretch their roots, misting them daily. Today I trimmed the brown off the roots and put them in pots. The one I got for ten bucks had time to show which roots were keepers and it was left with a few. So I have a leaf or two that is weak, and had some roots that looked plump but were broken and simply must of had the wrong fertilizer applied by the florist. I got a chance to see which roots the orchid seemed to be using. Mine might die. Anyway the black you have on your leaves might be from way too much moisture, but I am not familiar with the type you have growing. Epiphyites, forgive the spelling, seem easy and can live outa their pots for a few days in my area, indoors. Of course now these phals are my little faves and if they die I'll be crushed, but it will be partially my fault. Can you bring yours indoors and just dote on learning about them? Maybe that would help? What are yours growing in? A lot of my phalenopsis roots had to go, several hours ago....See MorePhalaenopsis black spots on roots firm to touch
Comments (9)First: I'm not a water based phal grower, 20+ in bark mix, one mounted and a few in spagh for me. Did any conditions change prior to this starting? As in, was the plant moved to a warmer/colder/brighter/darker location? Could it be a sun angle change? Are the roots fully submerged normally? If these are new roots, when did you lose the end parts of those new roots? As I see the tell-tale sign of a few existing roots with just the center 'threads' left at their ends. I'd think that unless your tap water changed recently that wouldn't be the issue, but generally all plants like rainwater over tap. I'd also think that having 1/2 of a percent of HP in the water solution shouldn't hurt. Personally, I'd leave out the HP as I'm not sure what it contributes in a continuous soaking (Anybody have a answer?). While I'm on the soapbox: I'm not a big fan of SuperThrive either, maybe as an initial blast to a newly planted/repotted plant, but I don't think it is necessary to expose plants to it continuously. I seem to recall hearing that heavy use of ST can affect flowering, as in making them deformed. Good luck, Bob...See Morejaviwa
