Hmmm, well, the room is currently in shambles, as we've started pulling things from the walls to paint. After I get the posters and everything, I'll definitely share. Could be a week or two, of course, but I'm looking forward to it. Thanks again for the suggestions! A few comments - - I like the idea of some WWII posters; I'll have to look more carefully on eBay. - The closest Wal-Mart is an hour away (as is pretty much everything); it might just be easier to pay for expedited shipping from some online store. - Love the idea of a tent, although I'm not sure where I could put it, especially if we do eventually construct that loft area above his bed. My idea was to (eventually, mind you) create a sort of facade so that it looked like something military - even if it just looks like a mock-up of a generic military 'building' out in the field. I'd use the same design (well, for the loft) for my daughters' room, except that in their case, it would be a barn. - I definitely need to visit a surplus store or two, so perhaps I'll line up a couple near WalMart or some such place. I'll have to return for help with the rest of my house! My home (with my decorating [in]ability), would likely benefit greatly from the good and helpful advice from all of you. I probably should have asked if I could post his profile on this forum. eeeek! All the decorating credit goes to my daughter, although I did hang the curtains for her. :) I'd also like to find the light fixture shown on the "aged brass" thread (in the link below)and paint it to look like a Maritime porthole. I think the most interesting and most inviting rooms are ones that people have furnished with the things they love. Frankly, I've never understood the concept of decorating simply to decorate, nor do I "get" what I often see on design shows -- the decorator finishing a room or house by going shopping for "accessories," none of which seem in any way personally linked to the houses' owners. Needless to say, I don't care for "themes" or "motifs" either. Our kitchen needs painting, but we have things in it anyway, and most of them will probably remain regardless of the wall color (assuming we can ever pick a color, that is): four oil paintings, one a nude, and two posters from a local town's annual festival; one pencil drawing; two watercolors; two framed original Mercer tiles; a metal folk art vaguely 19th century-style mermaid; an oriental carpet; a canvas floor cloth in front of the sink; two pieces of raku; one pottery pitcher; a glass-fronted cabinet filled with glasses, china bits, and glass, including some 1950s or 1960s iced tea glasses, some lead crystal wine glasses from the 1950s, some totally frou-frou-looking coffee cups, an art glass Object Dart and some Murano swivel sticks...also an 18th century wine glass and some antique saki cups. None of this was planned, nor were we trying for a look or theme. Maybe it doesn't even work! We just thought each item looked good in its spot, so that's where we placed it. Nannajoe, I think you should do what some other posters here have advised, and that is to finish your kitchen with your things, or things you see during shopping expeditions that you love. Don't worry about what marketers want you to buy this year (so that you can change it next year when this year's "in" thing is "out"). If you like what they're trying to sell you, that's wonderful. But if it's not you, then go your own way!

When we were house hunting, we walked into what is now our house and I fell for the feel of it. The entire house is neutrals, and I remember during the walk through seeing a couple of paint cards that were clearly used to select paint colors when going on the market. Colors range from an antique white to creams, mid-tone browns, squash (an orange-leaning tan) and a very, very dark brown, with wood floors and basic white tile. It really felt very cohesive to me, The house flowed well, both in floor plan and color. I knew I could move in and not have to do a thing for a good long while and that all of my furnishings could be dropped in and look put together quickly. The move went quickly, furnishing were placed and then I felt a huge sense of disappointment for the next few months. I felt it was just "blah" and started to get the itch to paint. But once I started to unpack art and accessories and add pops of color through those avenues and a little green in every room (matters to me so much! I don't know why). I think green=life...must be part of dealing with living in Western New York and having snow and slush and greyness for 6 months a year, it started to come to life. And everything I owned went up on the walls with no need to paint because neutrals are just that- neutrals! They go with pretty much everything. One caveat- my two girls who are 7 and 19 want their own colors desperately in their bedrooms. The youngest wants a soft pink or green that I will pull from her duvet cover and the 19 year old is looking for a plum or soft blue-grey. And as another person mentioned, there are doors on the bedrooms and they will get what they want! My love for interior design started when my parents let me pick my own paint color for my room when I was 7 or 8!
